I believe mental health is as important as physical health. It is my view that mental health can best be described as a spectrum - we are either in balance or out of balance. Currently the society we live in can make difficult for us to remain in balance, and we may find ourselves locked into thought or behavior patterns which prevent us from achieving the life we want. Therapy can help to restore our mental health equilibrium. My hope for my clients is that together we can identify and eliminate the disconnect between thoughts and behaviors so they can live a life filled with meaning.

I want to create a safe and supportive atmosphere where people can discuss their lives freely without fear of judgement. While the specific goals of therapy are always decided by the client, my overarching goals with each person is that they will come to understand their worth as an individual, and will find freedom to fully engage with life. I believe in not only addressing issues that hold people back, but also in exploring their unique strengths and interests.

I believe that everyone should be able to live their lives to the fullest. For many, there is something that gets in the way. I would like the opportunity to help you learn how to create an adventure worth living. I have experience helping adults, adolescents, and children make changes in their lives. I like to find out my client's strengths and build off of that. Look, everyone struggles from time to time, but I'd like to see if I can help you change that. Let's see if we are a good fit.

There are challenges in everyone’s life that can seem daunting. At such times, we need and deserve an understanding, compassionate, knowledgeable guide to assist us in identifying the thoughts and feelings associated with our current difficulties. Factors like background, ethnicity, race, and family dynamics are significant contributing elements that can be essential to clarifying and understanding the client’s situation. The goal for each client is to develop an achievable course of action that leads to effectively managing and reducing their distress.

Harmony, balance, and peace of mind are things many strive for. In today's world we encounter so many ups and downs. Have you found yourself feeling burned out or trapped? Are you surrounded by unknowns, or a wave from the past that you can't seem to outrun? Have you found yourself with a sudden weight that seems too heavy to carry? You've taken the first step by opening yourself up to the possibility of counseling. You don't have to carry the weight alone. No matter the struggle you can find healing through counseling in a safe place. If you start and stay with the journey, you can find your destination.

As a psychotherapist, I can assist you in unlocking your innate potential. In our busy lives we tend to lose perspective and neglect caring for the body, mind and inner self. In psychotherapy, you are assessed in a holistic manner using a biopsychosocial approach and together we work on areas of your life that are in need of examination and healing. You will feel safe and supported on your journey and will never be judged for being who you are. I enjoy working with clients from a diverse background and embrace diversity in my practice. I'm open-minded, compassionate, experienced (but not stuffy), and have a sense of humor.

During my studies, I have focused on the interactions between thinking, emotions, behaviors, and belief systems. I have learned that many factors, such as genetics and how and where someone grows up, deeply affect how we think and feel about the world when we're navigating the complexities of becoming and being an adult. The holistic and sometimes eclectic approaches I have learned are helpful for personal growth or when we have thoughts, actions, and feelings that we wish that we did not have or are just confusing to us.

I believe in a rapport-based approach to therapy: mainly authenticity in communication and interpersonal development of relationships. I aim to remove stigmas and depathologize issues, focusing on outcomes over symptoms. My philosophy is that people are often unaware of their core values, or stressors have made them seem far too distant. When building acceptance around the reality of problems facing families, and focusing on objectives that improve wellness, change can occur. The behavioral interventions, objectivity, and support found in the therapeutic relationship help lead individuals and families to their goals.

I now only work online through Skype. I have worked with a variety of issues over my 30 years in my profession. I have been an Adjunct Instructor in the UN-O Graduate Counseling Department, Consultant to area psychiatric programs, Director of Outpatient programs, and a presenter to a wide range of businesses as well as my outpatient practice. I like the diversity of my practice in terms of diagnostic features rather than a particular specialty. My many years of practice have allowed me to work with such a wide range of circumstances and issues.

I have specialized training and have emphasized in my practice the work of resolving the impact of traumatic experiences--helping individuals to break free of the past and move forward in their lives with greater functionality.
Couples and adults also seek counseling from me to more effectively handle life and relationships. My qualifications to counsel include: state licensure, board certification, and a masters degree in counseling. In addition, an undergraduate degree in philosophy and a second masters degree in spiritual development allow me a foundational understanding to address core-value issues.

I work hand in hand with individuals and families to address goals and actively attempt to de-pathologize emotional and/or behavioral challenges that individuals struggle with. I work to actively engage those I work with to live a meaningful, valued life. I believe that my work with children often involves active involvement of family and caregivers whatever their title or status helping promote meaningful improvements. I value the need to listen to and respond to the needs of the individual or family that is present in my office and seek to help them accomplish goals as quickly as possible.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
