Encountering stressors on a weekly basis - or even daily basis - are common human experiences. Whether it's at work, school, home, sport, or various other public settings, you can learn ways to gradually feel relief & move forward through leaning into the benefits of therapy. My approach to counseling begins with meeting the client where they are and walking with them on their journey to where they want to be.

This makes perfect sense to me. I too am often sideswiped at the surprises in life. Ever since age 12, I'd ask every wise person I knew about each new life surprise. Then I'd read every book I could find on the topic. I now share this knowledge with you in bibliotherapy-the use of books in therapy (& cinema-therapy). I also have vast life experience. If you're like me, life can feel overwhelming at times. It's easy for us to get stuck in depression, anxiety, stress, anger, etc. Our emotions and thoughts can take us over if we don't know how to better manage them. Do you find yourself ruminating on the past? Worrying about the future? Getting pissed off about way too many things? It's easy to lose our way in life. If any of this feels familiar, you're not alone. Life is hard, but we can all learn different ways to better manage our own life. You can take control of your life.

Looking inward is not easy, but you’re worth the hard work. I’m an advocate for embracing the entirety of life's experiences – whether they're messy, difficult, or broken, as well as joyful, beautiful, and simple. When we recognize our resilience and contentment stem from embracing imperfections, we discover freedom from feeling stuck. I believe every person deserves to have someone in their life that will listen non-judgmentally and offer unbiased counsel. Your thoughts and feelings don't have to define you.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
