Steve Brownrigg provides outpatient, substance abuse and chemical dependency counseling services to those affected by alcoholism and other addictions. I specialize in treating those clients with who are Dually-Diagnosed, with mental health disorders in addition to addiction issues. I am Certified by EMDRIA in the use of EMDR for Sexual Trauma and other Childhood issues. I also offer couples counseling and co-dependency counseling for significant others. I specialize with adult clients struggling with depression, anxiety, substance abuse/sobriety, and Women's Health, but all client needs are welcome.
I enjoy working with clients who struggle with mental health and/or substance use concerns. I believe dealing with life problems involves building up one's "foundation," and gaining healthier alternatives to work through day-to-day challenges. Open-mindedness and willingness are key, and I can aid in strengthening that foundation.

I have a strong passion working with the LGBTQ+ community, addiction, and trauma.
Harmony, balance, and peace of mind are things many strive for. In today's world we encounter so many ups and downs. Have you found yourself feeling burned out or trapped? Are you surrounded by unknowns, or a wave from the past that you can't seem to outrun? Have you found yourself with a sudden weight that seems too heavy to carry? You've taken the first step by opening yourself up to the possibility of counseling. You don't have to carry the weight alone. No matter the struggle you can find healing through counseling in a safe place. If you start and stay with the journey, you can find your destination.

Do you often find yourself going back and forth about making a change in your head? Is part of you wanting to make that change and part of you not feeling sure or quite ready yet? This is all part of the change process, and you are probably further along than you realize! Sometimes a new perspective and new tools can help us "get off the seesaw" and get closer to the life we want to have. I often see clients who are dealing with trauma, substance use, anxiety, or depression. I work to build a space of non-judgment and acceptance so my clients can be seen exactly as they are without fear, so we can find the path forward together.

I specialize in co-occurring disorders, or a substance use disorder combined with mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety or post traumatic stress disorder.
Welcome to the beginning of a potentially transforming time in your life. The decision to seek therapy is both scary and courageous as it requires a person to be vulnerable with a perfect stranger. Every time I begin to work with a new person, I am always awed by the motivation and fortitude it takes to make changes in one's life. To explore our fears, motivations, dreams, goals and strengths is not necessarily the norm of our society, however, to embark on this journey provides a significantly more fulfilled life.

Helping people to build or rebuild a life with a new "normal" through these difficult times is something I have enjoyed doing for almost 25 years. I have had the privilege of working with people by addressing a variety of issues including substance abuse and other addictions, co-occurring disorders, trauma, depression, anxiety, relationships, divorce, unresolved grief, co-dependency, and anger management to name a few. Together, we can restore the peace, serenity and confidence back in your life.

What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.
How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.
How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.
How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
