Other individual therapy approaches include grief counseling, solution focused brief therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, cognitive behavioral therapy, and strengths building.
Sometimes we feel stuck. Grief, anxiety, depression, and health issues can overwhelm you and make everyday life feel like you are spinning your wheels. Are you wanting to gain some traction to start healing? Are you ready for change? Are you looking for the next steps to living your best life? I have been in the field of clinical social work for 30 years using several modalities to help individuals make change in their lives. I use a holistic approach that looks at how we treat our bodies, what thoughts we have, how we connect to others, and how we connect to the universe.

I am closing my practice in Rocky Mt on Oct 1. I will be joining a practice in Durham in November. But when people are unhappy or anxious or distressed, they sometimes consider consulting a psychologist. I am not so concerned about finding a label for you as I am about helping you to find a way to enjoy your life and your relationships and be productive in a way that you find satisfying. I seek an approach that fits your problem and situation, and that may be insight-oriented, cognitive behavioral, using hypnosis or simply supportive, as we explore together, at a pace you are comfortable with, your goals and concerns.

I utilize CBT, DBT, creative expression with all clients, play therapy with kids and teens, and have completed Gottman level 1 & 2 for couple's work.
Humans will be human. This can come with worry, pain, joy, and an infinite spectrum of emotions in between. Maybe life has presented challenges to you, your family, or your relationship that feel overwhelming to navigate alone. Maybe there is a generational pattern that you wish to shift. You are not alone! I work with kids (8 and up), teens, adult individuals, and couples around connecting to their identity including racial trauma and stress, self-esteem, life transitions, addressing complex patterns and dynamics, and with those processing childhood trauma. I am accepting weekly and biweekly clients between the hours of 2-7p.

I use techniques that can be found in Interpersonal Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral, and Narrative.
To quote Maya Angelou, "There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you." I believe that you deserve to be heard, and I will work to create that safe place for you. Free of judgement and full of empathy. Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, negative thoughts about yourself or others, your relationship with yourself, or your relationship with those around you, I want to help you. My goal is not to fix you-you are not broken. Instead, my goal is to empower you. Guide you to a place of healing where you are confident in your abilities to cope with the things you struggle with most.

My theory of counseling is that people have specific behaviors they would like to change, which are caused by our irrational, self-defeating beliefs learned from earlier life experiences. My goal will be to assist with changing undesired behaviors and circumstances. Counseling is a personal exploration that leads to major changes in your life perspectives and decisions. These changes may affect significant relationships and understanding of yourself. Some of these life changes could be temporarily distressing. Together we will work to achieve the best possible results for you.

The most important variable of having a successful experience in therapy is when therapy is provided in a safe, confidential, and comfortable space with a healthy and strong therapeutic alliance between the therapist and the client. It has been my life’s calling and honor to support someone in their journey of emotional healing. My hope is that you experience, maybe for the first time, your true and authentic “self". And to build healthy, loving relationships with others.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
