Many of my clients are men, individuals with ADHD or ASD, people who identify as Latinx, or people in religious recovery.
My clients are often skilled performers and are perceived by others as easy-going and confident. Internally, my clients often struggle to trust their various emotional experiences. “Why am I feeling this? I’m too emotional - there must be something wrong with me. Others don't seem to struggle like I do.” You may be experiencing feelings of disconnection from those around you, sometimes even friends. You may be exhausted from masking your difficulties, and you may find yourself feeling very lonely or even angry. You really just want to feel "normal."

If you are a woman with ADHD, it is important to be kind and patient with yourself.
For women with ADHD, life can be overwhelming leading to feelings of anxiety, depression, and burnout. You may feel like you are constantly struggling to keep up or “be perfect” and worry about meeting your responsibilities at work and home. You may have tried for years to describe the challenges you face because of living with ADHD and feel defeated because others do not seem to understand or take your concerns seriously. With the right support, women with ADHD can feel empowered and in control of their lives. You can finally feel safe letting others see the "real you" and stop hiding parts of yourself.

I am a queer, bi-cultural, large bodied, first generation late college graduate with ADHD and a lot of experience overcoming obstacles.
Somewhere along the way you started feeling like a zombie. You are physically and emotionally exhausted. You're feeling burned out, overwhelmed, disconnected and on edge. Hopelessness is sinking in or has already sunken in. You're calling out to work or skipping classes. You are terrified that you can't handle life's demands or the needs of those who count on you. Your family and relationships are suffering. The words "self-care" elicits both a laugh and a sinking feeling in your stomach, but also, you know that at some point something has to give. You are tired of feeling guilty for having your own needs. It is time.

It's tough living life with an ADHD brain.
Welcoming New Clients. Those of us with ADHD often feel like we're not enough. We have so many interests and not enough time, leaving us feeling scattered and frustrated with our performance. Or worse, completely frozen, unable to get to the things we have interests in. Oftentimes, people misunderstand our intentions but we mean well. If only you could feel more confident, get along with people better, and more calm. Being neurodiverse is cool, but it's hard too!

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?
You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.
How does treatment for ADHD work?
Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.
Are there specific medications for ADHD?
Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.
How long does treatment for ADHD take?
It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
