Sometimes it might feel like finding peace, contentment, and a sense of being "okay" is out of reach. The weight of traumas, heartaches, anxieties, and other painful emotions can linger, clouding our thoughts and leaving us feeling stuck. But here's what's important: they contain the key to your own healing.

*Accepting New Clients* We all have times in our lives during which we struggle with life's challenges, some of us more than others. Are you struggling with depression, anxiety, or difficulty regulating your mood? Do you find yourself engaging in unhealthy behaviors to manage your distress? Do you find yourself helping others at the expense of your own emotional well-being? Are you having relationship issues such as difficulty communicating your needs? Are you avoiding people, places, or situations that increase your anxiety? I believe it is a sign of strength and courage to seek professional support when we become overwhelmed.

We humans are wired for contact and connection. Yet sometimes we don't know how to develop the needed connections; relationship building and managing one’s life effectively can thus be both terrifying and exhilarating . Lack of healthy support and resultant traumas leave us depressed, anxious, isolated, or insecure, leading to addictions, obsessions and compulsions, poor communication, relationship difficulties, or general dis-ease in one’s life. Yet healing is possible, and finding a therapist with whom you resonate is crucial.

Are you feeling unworthy of the life you are living or maybe incompetent in the role that you have? Maybe it feels like every thought that crosses your mind is a spiraling rabbit hole of worst-case scenarios, and it’s creating a barrier to reaching your fullest potential. Has it felt like you’ve been on an emotional roller coaster of sadness, anxiety, or confusion and you feel like the ride is never going to end? Perhaps an unsettling sense of wanting to isolate or build walls within your close relationships. You always make sure everyone else is taken care of first; however, you know it’s time for something different. Time for you.

Lets explore your life experience in a new and exciting way. I see suffering as an opportunity to break free from old patterns, habits, and ways of thinking that are not working for you anymore. It's a call from deep inside saying, "something needs to shift". This shift can come from exploring a relationship to a substance that you are using, and the pain, anxiety, depression, or a general sense of not loving your life that may come with it. Your unique journey is here right now, and experiencing it from a nonjudgmental perspective can be a vital ingredient to moving past whatever is holding you back from living your best life.

Most people who find me here are pretty miserable and hoping to find a way to make things different in their lives. I work best with folks who identify as girls and women and are willing to bust ass to achieve change. Therapy isn't a magic wand - I believe that each individual has the power to recognize what their therapeutic needs are and maybe even how to address them; I am here to provide gentle guidance and perhaps some different perspective to bring awareness to patterns of thought and behavior, therefore facilitating YOUR desire for change.

You have been feeling at war with your body and confused about your relationship with food. You are ready to heal the underlying issues that led you to be preoccupied with your body and food. You have tried other approaches and are ready to heal the root causes. You are highly sensitive, intelligent, intuitive and creative and focusing on food and your body has been a way to manage being a thin skinned person in a thick skinned world. Sometimes it feels like no matter what we do or how hard we try, we are treading water just to keep our head above the surface. We get stuck in patterns of behaving, thinking, relating, and coping that no longer serve us. We feel hopelessness, shame, fear, and self-doubt, keeping us from the things we need most- connection, vulnerability, and meaning. In this place, it is hard to see a way out and we feel helpless to make a change. We lose sight of who we are, what we value, and what brings us joy and contentment. My goal is to help you get “unstuck” so that you can engage more fully in your life.

Hi! I’m Kristin, a therapist and momma of two wild little boys. As parents, we hold these perfect, vulnerable creatures in our arms for the first time and vow to never let them feel an ounce of pain. But then they do. They have their own complex set of fears and worries and it’s terrifying not knowing how to help them. By even reading this and considering counseling for yourself or your kid, You’re making such a brave choice. We ALL need the support of the greater village to raise kind, well-adjusted kids.

Being human and experiencing suffering is inevitable. Yet, most of us have been conditioned to believe there must be something “wrong” with us if we are dissatisfied in our lives, struggling, or if we are in pain. In this way, life has a particular way of making us feel inadequate and alone. Therapy offers a unique opportunity for you to bring all of your depth and complexity into a space that acknowledges your humanity and is actively curated to attend to you. My orientation and training is informed by modern psychoanalysis: an approach that relies heavily on the therapeutic relationship as a form of technique and path to healing.

Prior to being in Asheville for almost a decade, I originally hail from Miami, Fl. I am a proud daughter of Cuban immigrants and a first-generation college student. As a teen I had my own battles with physical and mental wellness, difficulties with acculturation as well as struggled with cultural stigma in regard to mental health care. Through my own work, I have been able to find healing and am now honored to support others who struggle with their own mental wellness and similar issues.

I encourage my clients to identify and express their feelings and to more fully understand their personal frames of reference. I often use a practical approach, focusing on the development of short and long-term goals, looking at what has and hasn't worked in the past and examining the potential consequences of various courses of action and points of view. I also guide consideration of how the past continues to affect the present. I use a wide range of therapeutic activities to facilitate the therapeutic relationship and process. My goal is to help you reach yours. I hope you'll give me that opportunity.

There are so many different approaches and therapists out there, it can be really overwhelming to find the right fit. It takes a lot of energy and courage to then reach out to a therapist to start this process of recovery. I get it, it's tough, but it's worth it. We all want to get to the other side where we are able to manage the ups and downs the way we envision, but because of negative feelings and events, sometimes we get stuck from making that connection, which is why therapy can be helpful to support moving forward.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
