As a “generalist” I have no one speciality, and my client focus is all-embracing, to include the LGBQI+ and Trans populations, those in the charmed circle of adoption and foster care, and particularly, men's multifaceted issues are important in my practice.
Thank you for taking the first step by shoring up the courage to find me here. “Smooth seas do not make for skillful sailors.” This African proverb so appropriately explains the therapeutic work we will do together. Metaphorically, as we identify the issues and curiosities you bring into counseling, we become the seas; as we work together to explore and notice the things surrounding us, we develop a therapeutic alliance; we then become the sailors. We navigate the waters using therapeutic tools; we practice in a safe space, and build capacity in you, the soon skillful sailor. Reach my website: www.counselingteaandtherapypllc.com

Such issues include: Depression, anxiety, health issues (stress, pain management, smoking cessation, obesity), divorce recovery (for adults and children), adoption, low self-esteem, abuse survivors, PTSD, ADHD, grief, couples problems and psychological testing.
My goal as a psychologist is to increase self-awareness and create positive change in a nonjudgmental environment. Psychotherapy can relieve emotional distress, improve one's quality of life, help process painful events and increase self-awareness. Unfortunately many people are conflicted about the decision to get help and may see psychotherapy as a sign of weakness. It has been my experience that people who are unhappy for whatever reason and choose to go to psychotherapy are being assertive, healthy, and courageous in the handling of their problems.

Are you stuck and needing to process childhood trauma? Is your adolescent/teen sad, anxious or angry, and you know they need help? Do you feel like no one understands the challenges of creating a family (infertility, perinatal loss, miscarriage, IVF, adoption)? I shifted careers into mental health counseling in 2016 after 20 years of community advocacy to address injustice and empower women, children, and communities. I am a healing-centered, trauma-focused therapist now because I believe you - and your family - deserve guidance and support to reimagine and re-author your life narrative.

I have extensive experience with intimate partner violence/narcissistic abuse recovery, eating disorders, overachievers who are exhausted and want big change, traditionally marginalized people (BIPOC/LGBTQ/etc), family secrets, adoption/foster care, pre & post adoption search/reunion, DNA discoveries, identity distress, and overlapping issues.
Virtual services available CO/FL/NC/TX/VA, in-person TX/NC. Regardless of family structure, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, race, or other minority status, you are welcome. People who come to me are often asking themselves: What's wrong with me? Who am I/Where did I come from? Is what happened to me abuse? Why did my family keep this secret? Why can't I get over 'it'? What do I do, now that I know the truth? I've spent my life overachieving, so why don't I feel better yet? Maybe I'm making a big deal out of nothing.

My ideal clients are professionals in helping or leadership roles who face challenges in balancing their professional world, internal experiences, and family lives. We may be a good fit if you're looking for a therapist with a calm and warm demeanor who sharply attunes to the reasons you seek therapy. Clients who come to me may work with other therapists but come to me for intensive work in EMDR for trauma or work in family or couples relationships. Their goals may include feeling they have more control over what their mind and body perceive as a threat, how stress is experienced, or feeling less guarded in important relationships.

I am a counselor who understands how it feels to sit in front of a therapist, that is why compassion is important to me. Vulnerability can be difficult, but we can create a safe space so when you're ready, we can change the difficulties interfering with your wants. That is therapy, getting what you need to get what you want. For example, depression has different flavors, but it keeps us from engaging fully in life and/or losing focus on what our dreams are. Whatever you are seeking to make life better and better, I am here to help. In person sessions can be scheduled on a limited basis but Telehealth with be offered on going.

Are you taking care of everyone else but yourself. Do you find that you have to keep busy all the time, or else it feels like you’re wasting time. Are the emotions so much bigger than you can handle, and yet people just tell you “it is not that big of a deal.” Is it hard keeping friendships, because you find that you do all the communication. Get the emo playlist ready, and let's dig into that shit together. I can help you to find ways to reduce the hold anxiety and depression has on you.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
