Cognitive Behavior Therapy(CBT) is my primary treatment approach, yet I consider my clinical toolbox to be expansive and flexible, therefore permitting the incorporation of supportive and effective elements from other clinical approaches.
I have been a practicing psychotherapist for over 20 years. I have had the opportunity to work within very unique and challenging clinical settings, including within a school, within a psychiatric center, within a residential campus and for the past decade within my current outpatient practice. The aforementioned settings have afforded a wealth of empirically based mental health insight and training, while also allowing efforts to gather invaluable clinical experiences working with adults and adolescents, dealing with mental health issues ranging from anxiety, depression, Bipolar Disorder and various other personality disorders.

Our intrinsic need to adapt and evolve is a double-edge sword. We have developed coping skills that helps us survive external demands, modern society poses a threat to our way of living because we have not been able to catch up. We still behave the way we did thousands of years ago because we have not learned to discriminate between past and present. Let's explore the causes and mechanisms that make your problems what they are and create a plan to confront and resolve those issues to protect your mental health. I use an integrative approach to therapy that I call Behavioral Medicine.

I utilize evidence-based practices such as CBT, CPT, mindfulness, psychodynamic therapy, and motivational interviewing.
You should not have to face life transitions alone or silently. Therapy should feel collaborative and authentic for it to be most effective. Together, I work with my clients to unpack any negative thought patterns that could make them feel anxious, scared, or stuck. I am honored to be on the journey with clients as they increase their emotional awareness and start to make the changes needed to become the best version of themselves.

I also use CBT and ACT.
I have been working as a counselor since 2017 and have experience in multiple settings including higher education, private practice, and community nonprofit. My heart for survivors of interpersonal violence, including sexual assault, is what led me to counseling. However, I serve clients with many struggles and concerns. I do not want anyone's past experiences or negative core beliefs to hold them back from living a meaningful life.

Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and person-centered therapy.
Trauma (well, and life) can be tricky. It could be what clinicians call a “Big T” trauma in the form of abuse, neglect, living through a natural disaster, etc.; or it could be a “little t” trauma that stems from your 2nd grade teacher who had a flippant attitude toward you for reasons unbeknownst to you. Often times the “little t” traumas manifest for us in the same ways as “Big T” traumas. We may be aware of our trauma responses but often times we are clueless and just know that something weird is happening within and we can’t really identify or explain it. We just know it isn’t working for us and we want to change it.

Whether it's mindfulness to feel more present and engaged, person-centered as a holistic approach for growth and self-actualization, or CBT to redirect distressing thoughts and challenge negative thinking patterns.
You're constantly fighting those racing thoughts and questioning yourself. You notice your confidence is low which gets in the way of your relationships or responsibilities. You struggle with memories of the past or worries about the future. You wonder what others may be thinking about you or how to approach someone new to develop relationships. Your mind may be on an endless loop and intrusive thoughts may lead to feelings of fear. You find that you've lost pieces of yourself and don't fully know who you are or what you want. You realize that maybe it is time to seek help, maybe change is what you need. I'm here to help!

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
