Trauma and PTSD Therapists in Swannanoa, NC
Often times, events occur that are outside of our control, but profoundly affect our lives in such a way that our safety and stability are compromised. Consequently, we may find ourselves struggling to cope, going through the motions, or relying on maladaptive strategies to survive day to day. Our attachment wounds and trauma responses begin to dictate our thoughts and behaviors. Our relationships suffer, and our ability to form and maintain healthy connections diminishes. If this scenario is familiar to you and brought you to this page, I would be honored to be a part of your healing journey. Please note, I work with adults only.

Through traditional therapy, meditation, body awareness, breathing exercises, art, play, and EFT we begin the process of healing anxiety, depression, PTSD, and emotional distress.
Sometimes life entangles us along the way and it's held in our bodies in the form of mental distress. I believe that every person has their own innate light to self-healing but may need some support along the way. I find it a great privilege to walk with clients on the personal journey of healing. I work especially well with children doing play therapy and art, teens facing anxiety, trauma, and/or adversity, adults with trauma and/or anxiety ,and those who just don't quite fit cultural norms.

My particular area of expertise includes working with depression, bipolar, anxiety, grief, communication, relationship enhancement, and trauma.
I chose to enter the counseling field as a teen after I saw a counselor myself. My experience opened me up to learning to cope with things in a way that I had never learned. I was so changed by this process that I decided I wanted to give others what had been given to me.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a passion for helping individuals understand their unique wiring with compassion and curiosity. The brain is such a beautiful piece of us and I am continuously amazed at how it protects us when we need it to. Much of the work I do is assisting you in helping your brain and body reduce defenses when we truly are safe. I believe that taking an honest, directive and nurturing approach is the key to successful treatment. The predominate therapeutic modalities I use are EMDR, CBT, IFS and TRE.

Let’s face it – being a human can be tough. Life transitions happen and can be scary, sometimes shaking us to our core. Helping you work through your past, present, and planning for a brighter future is where I come in. Even if it doesn’t always feel like it, you're in the driver’s seat of your own life. With that realization comes responsibility but also power. It's my life’s joy to empower others to create the life that they've always envisioned for themselves. Trauma has a way of repeating itself across generations, sometimes despite our best efforts. By reaching out, you're about to make the first step in ending negative cycles.

Clients who come to counseling are ready for these issues and situations to stop controlling their lives. Clients are ready to find their inner strength, change from negative to positive coping, and work toward having a more positive and healthy life.

Imagine having a therapist who not only has over 25 years of experience as a clinical social worker but also views his profession as an art form. I bring a compassionate and skilled approach inspired by my grandfather, an artist who struggled with emotional needs. His wisdom, “A man who works with his hands, his mind, and his heart is an artist,” profoundly influenced me, leading me to see my therapeutic work through an artistic lens, despite being a red-green color-blind social worker.

Life can be challenging. For adults those challenges can include parenting, relationships, job stress, overwhelming emotions, life transitions, and many more. Challenges for children and teens can include school-related issues like academic stress, bullying, peer pressure, general "drama", and others. Ultimately, we are all searching for safety, satisfaction and fulfillment in our lives. Often, however, we are unsure how to deal with the challenges that prevent us from finding what we're searching for. It can be hard to know where to turn for help and hard to ask for that help.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
