I believe the hardest part of beginning any new experience is walking through the door. Acknowledging you need help and letting people in (let alone a stranger) is hard too! I strive to ensure that the experience of therapy is safe, welcoming, and positive. My hope is to help my clients discover strength within themselves and develop coping skills to help them improve their life and reduce unwanted symptoms.

"...healing means, first of all, the creation of an empty but friendly space where those who suffer can tell their story to someone who can listen with real attention..." (Henri Nouwen). My desire in counseling is to provide a safe, non-judgmental space for one to tell their story, to go deeper and discover the their own personal way of being human and the way they want to go. As Henri Nouwen says, "Quite often it is our fear for the hidden moments in our own history that keeps us paralyzed."

My ideal client is someone who is willing to bet at least 51% on themselves and their healing journey. You don't have to have everything together or pretend as if you do. Heck, we'll spend at least two sessions diving past that and exploring the root of whichever topic brings you to counseling. With me as your therapist, I want you as you are, with a bit of hope that we can make it through this obstacle!

Thank you for considering working with me as your counselor. I work individually and in groups with adolescents, adults, couples and families. I approach counseling from a person-centered theoretical background, meaning I believe that each person has within themselves the tools to grow, change, heal and improve. It is my goal to help individuals access those personal resources and grow in their personal self-efficacy. Self-awareness and self-efficacy, while goals in the counseling relationship, are difficult to achieve and will take time, energy, and client engagement. Clients will feel that they are able to face life's challenges.

One afternoon I told my wife that after another tour, I would be leaving the U.S. Coast Guard for a very different career. Serving my country and the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard is one of the greatest honors and privileges of my life. After serving nine years I knew that directly assisting and serving people is the life-giving work of my heart. I became a Social Worker and therapist because it is my greatest joy and pleasure to support you as you unify all your strengths and gifts to release your Faith, Hope, and Love into society.

As a counselor, I use techniques from evidence-based practices, which means the techniques have been proven by research to be effective. I draw from dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT )motivational interviewing (MI), and parts work. I utilize a person-centered, strengths-based approach, and I prioritize trauma-informed and gender-affirming care. My therapeutic lens relies heavily on attachment theory, as well. I see attachment as playing a major role in how we relate to others.

I have always had an interest in not only how our minds, bodies, and spirits are connected, but also what takes place when an imbalance exists and then how to implore healing. I look at an individual through a holistic lens, and use this approach, when appropriate. A part of this holistic approach, I have the belief that as a part of the world and universe in which we live, that we are all, interconnected and operate as a part of a dynamic system. I am especially interested in how mindfulness practices, yoga, animals, and nature, might influence the ideas of acceptance and non-judgment, and overall, positively affect an individual.

I have had many years of experience working with adolescents, children, adults, and their families in both facilities as well as in homes. Through this experience, I have built my practice of clinicians who really are able to connect and listen to our clients. My work with relationships, couples and families has led me to my current practice. Meeting people where they are is so important. Helping them find their strengths and supports within their life, working on goals that are hopeful and achieveable, and finally helping them find their purpose in life, their relationships, and within themselves is the ultimate goal of therapy

Taking the step to begin therapy (or to begin therapy again) is not an easy one and I applaud you for doing it! I believe that one of the most important reasons therapy is successful is the positive relationship built between therapist and client & I think it matters to find a therapist who meets your needs and provides a space where you feel most comfortable to get to work. My approach in session always leads with curiosity about your experience and the ways you have learned to navigate it, with the goal of providing a warm, creative and open space that is free of judgment.

Congratulations, you have officially taken the first step in prioritizing your mental health! Therapy can be a vulnerable place, but it is in your vulnerability that you find the biggest strengths within yourself! I aim to offer you a safe space while we work together to improve your mental well-being through processing your emotions, thoughts, and feelings. People often feel that they do not have a place to go that allows them to be completely vulnerable, so let me be that space for you! I have experience in working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, LGBTQIA+ and college students. I also have training in Subtle Yoga.

Adlerian Therapists

How does Adlerian psychology work?

In the framework of Adlerian therapy, people are motivated by a sense of belonging and community, which drives them to surmount feelings of inferiority so as to contribute to their society; fulfilling these desires can help people flourish. Adlerian therapy proceeds in four stages—engagement, assessment, insight, and reorientation—in an overall effort to understand the client’s past and to achieve their present-day humanistic goals.

Is Adlerian therapy humanistic?

Yes, Adlerian psychology is humanistic; it focuses on the whole person, emphasizes their strengths rather than just their symptoms, and centers them in determining how they can grow and flourish. This school of thought informed the work of Abraham Maslow, who went on to develop humanistic psychology.

How long does Adlerian therapy take?

Adlerian therapy is a short-term, goal-oriented form of therapy that takes around 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Of course, some people may be in therapy for a shorter or longer time frame; length depends on the individual and the problem or condition they wish to treat. Clients can ask their therapist about the timeline for treatment before they begin and check in periodically to ensure that they’re on the same page in terms of progress.

Is Adlerian therapy evidence based?

There is not as much evidence to support the effectiveness of Adlerian therapy as there is for other types of therapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. But Adlerian therapy may be the right therapy for some people—whether they’re seeking to treat mental disorders or achieve self-growth—especially those looking for a holistic approach that emphasizes relationships, community, self-worth, and purpose.
