Making the first call is sometimes the hardest part of the therapeutic journey. We all will face times when our heart is in pain. We might suffer heartbreak, death, failure, disappointment, or any other challenges. In those times, how do you care for yourself? You have the power to heal your life, and you need to know that. I understand that life can throw curveballs that may make it hard to complete simple tasks like getting out of bed and enjoying the things you once found joy in. C.S. She also has experience treating substance and alcohol use disorder and is supportive of multiple avenues to recovery including a 12-step framework.
Carolyn (she/her) works with individuals, couples, and families. Her approach is integrative, but grounded in a humanistic framework, believing strongly in the individual’s innate capacity to heal and the transformative power of the therapeutic relationship. She believes that therapy begins with a good relationship and fit between counselor and client and works hard to establish trust and safety early on.

Hi, I'm Julia! I am passionate about working with individuals navigating substance use issues, disordered eating and body image concerns, and people who are currently dating or looking to re-enter the dating scene. I am particularly passionate about working with those who struggle with alcohol use. I acknowledge the shame that addiction can bring and believe that everyone deserves to recover from the damage it causes physically, socially, and emotionally.

I specialize in providing therapy for adolescents and adults struggling with various mental health concerns including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, severe mental illness, and substance/alcohol use.
Every therapy client has unique needs and goals. Some people seek clarification during transitional times, while others desire an open, nonjudgmental space to share and process complex emotions. Many therapy clients seek a space to vent or air frustrations. I enjoy meeting each client where they are in their mental health journey and working to approach their individual needs.

Accepting New Clients Making the decision to begin therapy is a hard one. You are choosing to come to a trained specialist in mental health, and regurgitate all of your deepest feelings, emotions, and possibly a traumatic past. Working in mental health for the past 5 years, I have learned that mental health is a part of your personal growth and well being. It's a way to heal mentally, spiritually, and to learn to forgive. Forgiveness and grace may be needed in yourself. You will learn how to be your better and greater self, one day at a time.

I have received training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for anxiety, depression, and personality disorders from the Beck Institute. This is the highest training possible for CBT. You can ensure that you will feel comfortable in session.

It is an honor for me to have the opportunity to help others work through personal, relationship and other life issues by way of developing a strong therapeutic relationship. My primary goal in therapy is to establish and maintain a safe, trusting and accepting environment. I work from primarily ACT and DBT frameworks. Both of these therapies use Mindfulness strategies and other skills to "get you out of your head" and into living life to the fullest. Mental health and physical health are intimately intertwined. I often incorporate mind-body connection practices into treatment. Combining these techniques can elicit powerful change.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
