Social anxiety is bringing you down and limiting your life. You want solid friendships and maybe a romantic partner too, but anxiety gets in the way and you hide out instead. You see your peers connecting easily with others and feel alone and frustrated because for you, those relationships feel out of reach. How are you supposed to meet someone special when the idea of meeting in person has you shaky and nauseated? How are you supposed to make new friends when attempts at small talk leave you certain you sounded or looked stupid? And actually getting to know your neighbors and co-workers? At this point? Forget it.

After being in the helping field for over 25 years, I understand what a leap of faith it is to reach out for help as well as how stressful and scary it can be. I also know how important it is to be treated with respect, professionalism, and dignity. This need is surely magnified when it involves the people you care about the most. Seeking help for your family can also become very confusing and frustrating. I am working hard to eliminate those unnecessary barriers. My experience is with children, adolescents, and their families.

I enjoy working with clients who actively participate in their therapy. It is important to be ready to enter into therapy. The focus of therapy is on you not the others in your life - for after all you cannot change other people but rather the only person you can change is yourself. I can help you make the changes you want to make. Want to survive a trauma, stay sober, lose weight, interact better with others, recover from a loss, examine a troubled intimacy? This is what I do.

Society has often viewed vulnerability as a sign of weakness. I believe that by embracing and sharing our weaknesses we are demonstrating true strength. I am honored to walk beside my clients through some of their most difficult times in life. I respect and understand that the decision to "process and heal" from individual life experiences can be intimidating. I strive to build healthy and encouraging counselor-client relationships that will allow each person to feel safe and supported.

We are products of our environment, experiences and relationships. Along the way, we have gathered deeply internalized beliefs - some that serve our growth and wellbeing, some that don’t - emotions, both positive and negative, and chronic stress or trauma. All of this has impacted our life and much of what has happened in the past still resides deeply in our body, manifesting as behavioral, relational or emotional struggles, often unexplained and sometimes inexplicable.

I help people who’ve discovered that they have outgrown their lives find the most authentic versions of themselves. You may have become aware that something important in your life feels inauthentic, small or suffocating. This can manifest as symptoms of depression and anxiety, making you feel both overwhelmed and underwhelmed simultaneously. These life transitions can make you feel as if everything around you is falling away. This is fertile ground for growth and an ideal time to seek counseling. These experiences will break you, but can also be used as a catalyst to elevate you to create something more whole from the broken pieces.

Do you get exhausted seeing all the confusion in the world today? Does it seem like everything is backward and no one seems to care anymore? Prices have skyrocketed and you can’t seem to get ahead. You feel like you are stuck in a rut and most days you don’t even want to get out of bed because it all just seems so pointless. You’re tired of being sick and tired and you just feel frustrated and numb if you feel anything at all. All of this can lead to anxiety, depression, anger, and being overwhelmed. If this describes you, then you are not alone! You can’t expect this to just go away.

Navigating a path that is different from what your parents, friends, or even what you had originally planned should feel warm, celebratory, and freeing, but perhaps you’ve experienced inner turmoil, persecution, and pain instead. The pain of your identities, unique experience, and even your very existence being dismissed and invalidated. Entering into relationships that others don’t understand or approve of can cause tension in the relationship itself. It feels as though there’s a magnifying glass on your ‘non -traditional’ way of life and you’ve become hyper-aware of how you show up in and are experienced by those around you.

I live and practice by a radical notion: Being heard by another heals us, not just emotionally but intellectually and physically as well. “Heard” isn't simply conversing with peers, sharing memories with loved ones, or listening to a friend’s embarrassing anecdote. Being heard is to be recognized and validated, not just verbally but through another’s objective presence: “I see you. I hear you. I am holding this space just for you, not in spite of what you think of as failures or short-comings rather, because of your innate, complicated humanity with all its joy and sorrow, glory and shame, accomplishment and frustration.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
