Every flower needs both sunshine and rain to grow. Like flowers, I believe that our growth relies on our darkest days as much as it does our happiest. My goal is to assist clients in celebrating the sunshine and navigating through the rain.

I work with clients on issues surrounding anxiety, depression, trauma, LGBTQIA+, gender identity and expression, family dynamics, relationship issues, self-discovery, and career exploration. I approach the therapeutic relationship creating a non-judgmental space where you can share and learn more about yourself and your motivations. I will help you look at your assumptions, patterns, behaviors that work for you or aren’t working for you to achieve your goals in therapy. Mindfulness and present moment awareness is incorporated into moving forward as we work together.

I believe working as a counselor is my calling, not just my profession. I feel strongly that everyone deserves a safe space where they may speak about their thoughts, examine their feelings, unburden their past, and gain assistance in navigating the perspectives and tendencies that will determine their future. I have dedicated an extensive education and my life’s work to providing that safe space and learning techniques that can be of assistance. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Psychology, minor in Christian Counseling, and my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University, VA.

I identity as a queer, genderqueer person. I specialize in working with the LGBTQ+ population, including couples, and families, through a sex-positive, affirming perspective. As a therapist, I utilize a variety of techniques to help individuals, couples, and families work though a variety of concerns including religious trauma, attachment concerns, substance use, and shifts in identity. I draw from dialectical behavioral therapy techniques, through feminist therapy to assist clients in treatment. Change is hard and I provide a safe space to make that change with compassion and accountability.

I believe that therapy is the best gift you could ever give yourself. Anyone can benefit from taking the time to understand how their minds operate and what parts of their identity are challenging the peace, happiness, and love they deserve. As a person-centered therapist, I understand the value of meeting an individual where they are at with their lives and building off their strengths/resources. My goal as your therapist is to provide empowerment and the instillation of hope for whatever change you want to create in your life.

My therapeutic approach is collaborative, compassionate, direct, and unconditionally caring. I utilize a person-centered approach incorporating trauma-informed principles and a harm-reduction lens. I seek to foster brave spaces for deep transformation to take place, where laughter and tears are welcomed to flow freely. Some therapeutic modalities that I incorporate include polyvagal theory, EMDR, attachment theory, DBT, and somatic-based processing. These theories are guideposts of my clinical judgment, but ultimately I recognize you as the expert of your own lived experience.

Every child yearns to be seen, heard, and understood. My goal with our time is that your child feels more connected with their inner world and more confident in speaking for their needs. My style of counseling is particularly effective with children experiencing worries and having a hard time connecting with and/or listening to their body. I want to support you (the care-taker) and your little one. Through our relationship, communication will improve, self-esteem will boost, we will practice mindfulness and autonomy, and problem solving. I have a specialty in building emotional integration in children with autoimmune disorders.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
