I am an analytic candidate with the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas, and generally meet with people at least once a week.
Your symptoms serve you, but they come at a price. Psychotherapy can render them obsolete. Treatment will address your problems through a collaborative process of speaking and reflection. Together, we will explore your thoughts, work through your feelings, and look at your relationships with others. As you try to put words to what's on your mind, the energy you spend on your worries will become yours to do with as you please. If you are not getting what you want out of life, therapy can help you begin to change.

Freud is credited with stating that two things really matter in life: love and work. I help people find greater satisfaction with a) their relationships with themselves and others, and b) what they do to make meaning in their lives. I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship to help you maximize your spiritual, physical, and emotional potential. Operating from an orientation which draws primarily on a combination of contemporary psychoanalytic, attachment, and neurobiological perspectives, I am fully committed to walking with you on your journey toward greater satisfaction and fulfillment.

Most clients come to therapy out of an experience of profound suffering. Their symptoms may be debilitating, leading to crisis, or they may exist on the periphery as a dull, irritating presence. They want relief and answers. Not only can we find relief and hope for symptoms but this process will entail getting to know oneself through the intermediary of an empathic, caring relationship to another. Even in behavioral skills work, we will work towards being able to contextualize your symptoms in the broader perspective that draws in interpersonal relations, your connection to your own body, and your place in the world.

Are you feeling overwhelmed? Are you feeling "stuck" in your journey, or maybe frustrated with where you are in your life? When you add in anxiety, depression, frustration from being unable to focus, grief, or any other mental health struggle, it probably adds to the whirlwind you feel like you're stuck in. Maybe you've been told "it could be worse," or to "be grateful," but this didn't make you feel any better. There are (usually) many different ways to look at a situation, but sometimes when you're in the thick of it, it's hard to see clearly. An outside perspective can help!

You want to appear successful, like you have it “all together” but deep down are struggling to feel confident in who you are or cope with challenging experiences that have occurred in your life. You feel the pressure to be perfect all the time and you spend a lot of your time making sure everyone else is taken care of, but you some how neglect your own needs. Maybe you’re tired of stressing out, tearing yourself apart every time you mess up, or feeling like you’re about to crumble at any second. At this point, it may be hard to even remember when you didn't feel like this. But one thing is for sure, you’re ready for some relief.

My approach is psychodynamic but eclectic, in a way that is inclusive, creative and tailored to your needs. Psychodynamic psychotherapy works on the idea that there is more to be known about ourselves than we think. I am experienced working with clients dealing with depression, anxiety, chronic illness, relationship difficulties, family of origin issues, identity, grief, addiction, and trauma. Whether it is mental or emotional or pain that you are going through, I help you feel more aligned, quieter in your mind to gain insight and clarity.

I'm a clinical psychologist who is located in North Carolina, but also doing teleheatlh in New York and Florida. I enjoy working with adults to solve life's challenges in individual and couples therapy. My clients mostly struggle with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and difficulties adjusting to life changes. I also work with couples to gain a more satisfying relationship based on friendship and intimacy. While therapy can seem like an uncertain journey, it often leads to remarkable growth and self-discovery with the right professional support.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
