Acceptance is a courtesy that is often given to others, but it is a consideration I see many people are quick to deny themselves. My goal is to help my clients create the awareness and flexibility to recognize that their thoughts, feelings, sensations, and memories do not define their identity. The human experience includes an array of wonderful and horrible experiences. It is the meaning we give to these experiences that allows for their space and control in our lives. I work with my clients to identify their values, be mindful of the present moment, and accept their thoughts and emotions without equating them to their worth.

My approach in counseling centers around acceptance of what can't be changed, realistic solutions to improve client's lives, learning appropriate responses to emotions and meeting each client where they are.
Creating change in your life can be hard. Sometimes it might feel as if situations in your life are so overwhelming that you don't even know where to begin. I am honored to assist you in navigating those changes and help you feel that you are not alone in meeting the challenges in front of you. It's important to feel in control of ourselves and, to some extent, the world around us. In an ideal therapeutic relationship, I believe that the client determines the direction and success of treatment. Let's put it this way, if we were to go on a journey together - you would be the driver while I would act as the "GPS" so to speak!

My approach utilizes methods from Person-Centered Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Processing Therapy.
Have you recently experienced a change in your life that left you feeling “stuck”, alone, scared, or even hopeless? What about having a conflict with a loved one? I work with clients experiencing a variety of concerns, but most often with those experiencing Anxiety, Depression, School/Life Changes, Post Traumatic Stress, medical crises, and substance use disorders to encourage them to openly and honestly work through hard topics, and leave the space feeling more confident and resilient. I specialize in working with adult clients, pre-teens and teens, individuals and families in the palliative care system, and Veterans.

My approach to counseling is to use existentialism to assist the client in reaching their journey with the accountability and acceptance that they are unique and powerful. By using a collaboration of tools, the individual and myself are able to discover a pathway that requires hard work, but freedom in knowing that each step is celebrated. I value my client's journey as it is what has created their character, it is my desire to assist them to live life with purpose using their journey to succeed.

Do you get anxious or irritated easily? Do you suffer from panic attacks? Do you find yourself reliving past painful events? Running on empty or worse yet, living fueled by anxiety, sadness, fear, or frustration is not fun. It can disrupt your relationships (including the one with yourself), your sleep, your digestive system and/or your experience of physical pain. It's so easy to be caught up in worry, relationship troubles or unproductive behaviors. Yet when you slow down and notice this is happening, you don't know what to do.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
