I have been in private practice for over 17 years. I work with people who are dealing with Anxiety and depression disorders. During the time in private practice, I stared to see more adolescent clients. I believe that my experience in music and athletics have helped me in developing a rapport with the adolescent population. I became extremely interested in psychology in sports, and the impact the mental game can have on an athletic performance. I enjoy helping athletes improve their mental game and getting the best performance they can on a consistent basis. I also offer neurofedback to those who want an alternative to medicine.

I provide faith-based counseling for people who want to find help and hope for life's problems. I am glad to work with anyone age 13 and over, but I focus on adult individuals and couples. I have a special interest in counseling and coaching men. I work with people on issues of grief, anxiety, depression, self-image, marriage, pre-marital, stress, perfectionism, vocation/career, spiritual crisis, and spiritual/religious abuse. Even though I am faith-based, I can work respectfully with anyone from any background without forcing my beliefs on them.

Hi! I’m Frank, and I’m here to help clients unlock the potential within their ADHD. I am skilled at empowering my clients with the knowledge needed to understand that ADHD is always a double edge sword. It’s a superpower and can also cause great pain when left untreated. I use evidence-based practices from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness techniques to help my clients harness their strengths and manage symptoms effectively. I am also skilled in navigating the intersection of ADHD and depression. Frank understands that unmanaged ADHD symptoms can contribute to feelings of sadness and low self-worth.

Hi, I'm Ryan. I know finding the right therapist can be overwhelming and intimidating at times. I hope this introduction provides you with a sense of my approach as a therapist, and who I am as a person. Perhaps we’ll be a great match! I firmly believe that our success together is dependent on being able to make an emotionally safe and secure connection where you feel comfortable being open and vulnerable. I often use humor in my personal and professional life as a means of connection. Once you feel comfortable in the therapeutic relationship, our work together becomes much more effective and efficient.

After receiving my Doctorate degree from the University of Virginia in 1973, my family and I relocated to Wilmington, NC. I have been in full time private practice since 1981 and an integral part of the psychology community. My personality traits include sensitivity, compassion, and an active sense of humor. Nevertheless, no therapist is right for everyone, and I encourage new patients to have 3-4 sessions with any counselor before judging whether there is a connection. If we connect, great. If not, I am happy to assist patients in finding healthy and appropriate therapists suitable for them.

I use the specialist rather than the generalist model of care. I am board certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and certified in Prolonged Exposure for PTSD and maintain up to date continuing education, seek any needed supervision, and keep up with relevant research findings in those areas. As such, I am particularly qualified to work with clients who seek treatment for issues related to Borderline Personality Disorder, Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Substance Use Disorders and PTSD.. I believe that if you are suffering from a specific issue, you deserve to receive the appropriate care for that issue.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
