Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists in New Bern, NC
I specialize in treating anxiety disorders such as OCD, phobias, and PTSD.
I am a twin mom who became fiercely passionate about working with women after my own pregnancy. Navigating a complex system with a lack of resources for new mothers made me realize that I needed to shift my career focus to creating a space for new moms to heal mentally, physically, and spiritually after having a new baby. I am an avid runner and health coach in addition to being a therapist. Integrating movement and holistic wellness is a critical component to my approach in therapy. I am currently offering virtual therapy appointments in TN, SC, and NC.

Welcome to Gaining Clarity Counseling Services! All are welcome here! I take pride in being real. While techniques and interventions are important, the relationship between therapist and client is essential for positive outcomes. I have particular interest and experience in working with those impacted by traumatic experiences. I have come to recognize that much of client distress stems from unresolved trauma (grief, abuse, mistreatment, etc.). Together, we will address root causes and equip you with the tools necessary for sustainable lifestyle change. Please note services are 100% virtual at this time.

Let’s face it…life can be challenging. For many these last few years of hurricanes and covid have shaken our ability to cope with all the usual “stuff” of life. So, experiencing challenges at this time is more normal than you may think. Many people are turning to therapy to figure out and resolve the “what’s wrong” in life. What then, is therapy? What can you expect? I am Jan Hood, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC). I have worked in many public agencies over the years, but always with a focus on supporting children and families as they navigate available services.

From my experiences as a veteran, wife, daughter, mother, and a licensed marriage & family therapist, I have a great appreciation for the healing that can occur when life's difficulties are confronted and understood in the context of relationships. Research shows that more progress is made when individuals have natural supports involved in their treatment. These supports may come in the form of family members, friends, significant others, coworkers, or another professional in your life.

My program is most successful with people who recognize they need change, are ready to change, and believe it’s possible. They can identify at least one problem or unreached goal and are committed to learning something new. The clients that experience the fastest changes are those most willing to consider new perspectives about their pain or people and try new approaches. We're not going to talk a lot about the whys, we'll address the what - what is wrong and what you want instead. If you're ready to release the trauma and embrace joy, forgiveness, and freedom, you're a great fit!

Cognitive-behavioral, individualized therapy approaches. I am part of our excellent pain clinic team, but I also treat stress, anxiety and depression issues unrelated to chronic pain. Please be aware that psychologists are required to report abuse of dependent persons or minors. Please do NOT leave personal issue information in your email or voicemail as a symptom will suffice such as "grief" or "anxiety." You will be contacted by our front desk. Thank you.

Are you are living in a constant state of worry? Are you a couple who is sinking into a cycle of conflict that you can’t escape, or a Christian who feels lost and seeking spiritual guidance? Then Anchored Hope Counseling is the place for you. My counseling philosophy can be summarized in the name "Anchored Hope," which was inspired by Hebrews 6:19; a verse that teaches that hope for healing can be steadfast and anchors us. With secure hope, we may not always see how the healing will come but we know that it will come through faith. For us, counseling is a way to direct people to hope so that they can experience joy and wholeness.

As a potential client, know that your courage to face personal vulnerabilities and uncertainties is acknowledged from the start. To realize and understand the efforts you've made already affords us early opportunities to consider possibilities in therapy. Your desired outcome is the goal. The process of sharing, reflecting, and adjusting any internal and relational patterns is our therapy means to this end. The clinical approaches perhaps most reflective in therapy are cognitive-behavioral, inter-personal and family systems, and acceptance/commitment. Interventions are based on your child/family, couple, and individual needs.

They may present with issues in mental or behavioral health, including mental illness or addictions, and are seeking ways to help prevent or lessen the presenting problems in their life. I see therapy as an invaluable tool & asset, which can heal, empower & enrich one's life. I am committed to joining you wherever you are -- sadness, joy, discomfort, feeling "stuck,” or all of the above. By embracing ALL of what we feel -- the positive, the painful, and the uncertainty -- I believe that we achieve more enlightened, fulfilled lives. My belief is that over time we can build a foundation to create a safe and trusting space to make it easier to share your experiences and challenges.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists
How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
