Being a child or adolescent in today's world is difficult, and having someone available to truly hear you and provide support with unconditional positive regard can make all of the difference in the world.
Hi, I’m Maggie! I help children, teenagers, and young adults address emotional and behavioral challenges related to anxiety, depression, stress, school issues, and interpersonal struggles. I also work with the parents of my clients to support them as well. We all recognize that life is tough right now, and my goal is to help each of my clients know that they are valued and important. My experience working in schools, partial hospitalization programs, and private practice settings allows me to tailor treatment to each person I see.

Sometimes we ask ourselves, 'Why do I feel this way? Am I the only one going through this?' The answer is that you are human and you are not alone! We all go through life transitions, anxiety or relationship conflicts that can be overwhelming and can leave us struggling to find meaning and purpose in life. Reaching out for support is a courageous first step and I am grateful to walk along side of those willing to begin their own unique healing journey. I hope to work together to explore and promote personal growth and healing that will continue to serve you well after the therapeutic process has ended.

I firmly believe that healing comes from a place of deep understanding and insight. I approach counseling from a strengths-based and person-centered framework, meaning I believe that clients already possess the resources necessary to heal and grow, they have just yet to identify them. I strive to be a sounding board for my clients to assist them in building upon their strengths, gain confidence, and improve their overall well-being. I see and value the uniqueness of each person and therefore draw from several different therapeutic modalities to tailor my therapeutic approach to the individual needs of my client.

Are you, or is someone you love, struggling with anxiety or depression? Maybe you haven't been feeling like yourself lately and don't understand why. Perhaps you have been feeling overwhelmed or hopeless and are ready to make a change. I can support you in that change. The model of therapy that I practice primarily is Cognitive Behavior Therapy, or CBT. Although I am not strictly a Christian Counselor, I am a Counselor who is a Christian. The choice of whether or not to incorporate spiritual issues in counseling is yours.

We all have times when we struggle with feelings of being sad, anxious or depressed, grieving over the loss of a loved one, going through a transition in life, having low self-esteem, experiencing relationship problems, or just feeling low or "off." These and other forms of conflict can be overwhelming.

I am so glad that you stopped by and took the time to read about me and explore the possibility of working together.Getting started is always the hardest part of any road to change. Deciding who you are going to trust with your information is also an important part of your new beginnings. I want to be supportive of your goals and work together in discovering how you can reach and surpass them. In my time away from being a therapist, the most important thing to me is my family - my wife and three young children - and spending as much of my time with them that I can. I enjoy hiking, fishing, cooking and reading when I have the time.

We all long to feel a sense of belonging and positive relationships are essential in helping us live fulfilling lives. However, old wounds and different communication styles can sometimes prevent us from finding satisfaction in our current connections, leaving us feeling stuck and disillusioned. Life also has a way of pulling the rug from under our feet making us feel lost, broken, and unsure of how we got to this point in our story.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
