I love working with folks who worry their histories, lives and identities are too complex or weird for therapy to be helpful.
I believe that clarity regarding who you are, what you believe, and why you believe it are among the greatest predictors a good and joyful life. I also know that a "joyful life" can sound absurd when you're struggling with depression and anxiety. My clients and I talk about their ideals and underlying beliefs as context for their struggles. Together we examine the presumptions and expectations that--when left unchecked--lead to so much heartache. We work together to create a narrative of what could and might be instead, along with a solid plan for how to bring new realities into being.

I am a licensed LCSW, LCAS, and CSI, and have been a social worker since 2014. I have worked with many individuals, to include people struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance abuse. As a queer cis woman, I specialize in serving the LBGTQIA+ population. I have a laid back approach, and believe in the importance of building rapport with the people I serve. Life on life's terms can be challenging, and you do not have to face it alone.

Since September of 2016 I've had a private psychotherapy practice in which I help adults from all walks of life get to know themselves better, because you cannot love what you do not know, and love must be present for any other lasting changes to happen. My motto is, "You don't need to be fixed; you just need to be found." Talking to a professional listener gives you a chance to hear out loud what you really think and feel. I've heard countless people surprise themselves. Talking freely provides the kind of clarity that is essential for emotional, psychological, relational, and spiritual growth.

At some point in life, we all need to reach out for help. Whether we find ourselves repeating old patterns, struggling to create the life and relationships we want for ourselves, or overwhelmed by our emotional pain, there comes a time when we realize we need extra support.

Change is hard. Our nervous systems can interpret even the most well-intentioned changes as threats, which means sometimes it can be difficult to understand why we feel or behave the way we do. I deeply respect that, as social creatures, we are wired to process transitions through connection with others. I often find that what my clients believe are character flaws are actually intelligent coping responses—they served an important purpose at one point but are no longer helpful in their current lives.

I have worked with those who are struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, life transitions, and have experience in chronic pain/health psychology.
Accepting NEW clients! I know that finding a therapist can be an overwhelming process. I honor your courage and hope that I can provide a soft place for you to land. I aim to foster a safe, empowering, and collaborative space for my clients. Sometimes we find ourselves losing focus of our life's purpose. Together, we can help identify your values and incorporate them in your life. Through mindfulness practices and acceptance-based strategies, I can help you let go of what is no longer serving you. The ultimate goal for my clients is to decrease any areas of distress while pursuing your values and finding more meaning in your life.

Humans are pretty cool. We can watch and rewatch our favorite movies, travel to faraway places, or dye our hair whatever color we choose. But we can also make rash decisions, relive that awkward moment from 7 years ago, or even hurt our friends and family emotionally. These things make us uniquely human, too. I work with a diverse group of adults and young adults experiencing a myriad of presenting concerns, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, life adjustments, relationship problems, trauma history, suicidal ideation, identity development, and LGBTQIA. I provide therapeutic services virtually and in-person in Asheville.

Your struggle with depression, anxiety, anger, shame, relationship problems.
In our first session we will discuss working together on-line. I use a combination of IFS (Internal Family Systems) and EMDR. IFS is an extraordinary therapy. In safe, gentle, respectful ways, IFS accesses and TRANSFORMS that which is the cause of your problems: your hidden and not-so-hidden fears, shame, anger, hurt… why you have negative thinking (I’m not good enough, things are not the way I want them to be), as well as the negative ways you may be acting (in anger, critical, impatient, abusing substances). I use a special on-line platform for EMDR which I am finding works well.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
