I am passionate about working with children, adolescents, and their families. I specialize in play therapy and solution focused therapy. I look forward to helping you or your child work through the every day struggles and sometimes overwhelming struggles of everyday life. I approach counseling from a holistic perspective and feel the child will benefit more from counseling if the family unit is healthy. This is why I invite the family to be a part of therapy and work to make the family a healthy place for the child/ teen to grow and mature.

I’m Dr. Simone McIntyre and I’m a 2022 graduate from Capella University where my dissertation focused on Licensed Professional Counselors experiences receiving referrals from African American Pastor’s. This topic is so close to my heart because I was raised that Black people don’t do therapy. Additionally… I’m a preacher’s kid and a minister and understand the power in faith and psychology.   Although Speak Your Peace Counseling was founded in 2024, I have worked in the field in various capacities since 2002.

I look forward to assisting you with developing the skills to live a more abundant life while implementing the tools that you already have! Life can be hard at times and with the right coping skills, life can be more manageable to those experiencing depression, grief, anxiety, substance use, and other mental health issues. Working with those who have experienced relationship issues, such as infidelity, abuse (domestic, verbal and/ or physical) can learn how to become a survivor instead of a victim. I know that building a healthy therapeutic relationship is the first step in the therapy process in a non-judgmental environment.

I enjoy helping men, women, their marriages, and their families. While I specialize in individual and marriages, I do provide counseling to all who pass through our doors. Sometimes women need a male's perspective on things, while kids may need an outside adult figure to get a different perspective or role model. I also specialize in helping men overcome masculine passivity, pornography addiction and sexual integrity.

An important element I bring into counseling is a holistic understanding of you and your system. Through this, we discover dynamic ways to affect the issues in which you desire to see positive and enduring change. Furthermore, I practice a balanced approach. One side of counseling is more hands-on advising that involves practical and effective life skills. On the other side, counselors are neutral collaborators that facilitate self-exploration, depth, and healing. Through scholarly research and personal practice, I strive to bring both elements into my counseling relationships to achieve quick and lasting systemic change.

The events that happen are not intended to be permanent, but instead are part of our journey. It is our story being written and we have the ability to choose the next chapter. The path of life can have difficult times, often with unexpected twists and turns. When this occurs, it can be beneficial to have someone walk with you through the challenging times. My clients are motivated to write their own story, to have someone support them but to work towards empowerment, self-confidence, internal peace, and ultimate healing. My clients know their past does not define them but instead empower them to be the best they can be!

As a counselor, I love collaborating with clients to find out what their goals are and help set a course to achieve them. Whatever the presenting problem, it is my privilege to work with you to explore what solutions we can find together. We can tackle specific problems that you encounter in your relationships, workday, or social settings. We can also seek to understand the root of issues that seem to interfere in these same areas. You will be at the wheel while I help you navigate the road to improved mental health. We can start right away.

Experience, experience, experience. As a psychologist with over 35 years serving adults, children, adolescents, couples, and families, I understand that "well begun is half done" which points to the importance of respecting each individual's unique starting point in therapy. I have a distinct health orientation based in science which suggests that most emotional distress is ultimately stress-related. Therefore, emotional balance and well-being is inherently available to most individuals. Ultimately, most of us find that quality emotional work pays off.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
