Hello and welcome. You may be an individual or a couple seeking to understand how past attachments, fulfillments, and traumas inform your present with the hope of repairing and improving your relationship to Self and others. Or, you may feel lost and want to explore how to live life with intention, meaning, and authenticity. I help clients explore their attachment styles, grief, losses, and traumas with curiosity, mindfulness, and loving-kindness. It is my privilege to walk alongside clients, witnessing them blossom within this confidential, safe space of existential reflection, forgiveness, acceptance, and rebirth.

When the intensity of painful feelings, the persistent chatter and/or stories in our minds become paralyzing; when worry or rumination interferes with sleep or functioning; when the depression and/or anxieties constrict life; when disempowerment and feeling overwhelmed drain energies and self-esteem; when feeling stuck, miserable and/or afraid is too familiar; when fears and uncertainties rob you of a vital life, it is important to know that you may expect from me radical acceptance, full attention, compassionate listening, active participation, extensive knowledge plus experience, to assist, support and facilitate the creative journey for renewed passion for life.

I work with children, adolescents, teenagers, and adults dealing with a range of issues from depression and anxiety, to autism and behavioral disorders.
My mission is to make therapy fun and interactive. Therapy can be a daunting prospect for many people, and I aim to make it as productive and painless as possible. I don't necessarily have an ideal client, just an ideal match. If the client feels connected and hopeful, change and progress can occur. I utilize several modalities, each one catered to the specific client, while at the same time incorporating family work to better support the individual. I myself am ADHD and can relate to children and adults who struggle academically and socially, incorporating a holistic approach to the therapeutic relationship.

I help clients recognize that they do not have to be victims of their circumstances or history. Sometimes we are faced with painful circumstances. Sometimes even everyday life begins to feel overwhelming. The unfortunate reality is that we cannot always control what happens in our lives. We can, however, choose how we respond to the difficult things that occur. I believe that all of us have the ability to grow and to make positive, lasting change in our lives. My role as therapist is to help facilitate this process.

Does your life seem like everything should be okay, but it isn't? Do you have panic attacks, break out in sweat, have heart palpitations? Have you had sexually confusing experiences? Do you feel detached? Do you experience flashbacks? Do you have nightmares? Is it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep? Do you startle easily? Are your angry outbursts hurting your relationships? Do you feel guilt, shame, despair, hopeless, helpless, worthless, withdrawn, numb, irritable? Are you self-destructive? Are you hostile? If any of these are true for you, I would be honored to work with you.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
