Do you ever feel stressed or overwhelmed by others' expectations? Do you sometimes struggle to feel fully engaged with life? Battling with an addiction or eating disorder is a painful process that is driven by secrecy and control. My goal is to help break down these walls and bring what hides in the darkness into the light in a nonjudgmental, caring, and compassionate manner so you can begin to see a different way of living. I truly believe only when you feel enough support and safety are you able to begin making choices for health and recovery.

I am trained through the advanced level in SE ( somatic experiencing).
I am a believer in the human experience and normalizing the suffering that is a part of that experience. I do not take a pathological approach to individuals' mental health. I believe you will suffer within your lifetime and that we can work together to build your capacity for resilience. That being said I understand that some individuals have a chemical imbalance, or may experience psychosis if that is the case we can work together to take the proper steps for your health. Presently I work with children from ages six and up as well as adults.

Hi friends! I'm Carolyn, a biracial Certified EMDR Therapist in Richmond, VA who specializes in recent, ongoing, and preventative EMDR protocols for somatic-based healing & sustainable symptom relief from anxiety, depression, addiction, stress, burnout, hypersensitivity, relationship drama & ALL traumas.
Trauma responses & beliefs can FEEL permanent when you have the coping skills but LACK the ability to access them. What you need is a more somatic approach to healing memory networks w/ more desirable response patterns learned from what's past, to reflexively improve responses in similar future instances. We’ll demystify how EMDR works as a domino healing effect, prepare you for what to expect, AND give you a taste of its efficiency. If the goal is therapy that works to become PRN, I'm the EMDR Therapist for you.

Somatic Therapists
How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.
Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.
Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.
What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
