Areas: anxiety; trauma, narcissism abuse recovery, identity exploration, life transitions, addiction recovery support, compulsive eating behaviors, depression & religious trauma.
Despite best efforts, the clients I work with find themselves frustrated, overwhelmed, or disheartened when trying to achieve goals, grieving a loss or navigating life’s unique challenges. They want to heal; disrupt patterns within themselves; or in relationships. Typically, they are open to the idea of “awakening” & want to feel more grounded within themselves & explore how they interact with the world. Through the lens of authentic compassion, they’re awakening or questioning our cultural conditioning that reinforces the idea that we are not enough. I create a genuine space for you to come as you are.

Life events occur that can overwhelm our coping skills or maybe we have been dealing with challenges for a long time. Either way, there are times we could all use support and perspective. I often work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, interpersonal relationship issues, trauma, and eating disorders. I believe that social/cultural identities, roles, and life circumstances impact how we feel about ourselves and others. I'd like to get to know your unique story. Whether this is your first time looking for a therapist or it's time to re-connect with treatment, you have taken the first step.

You will find that I provide care that meets the highest standards of my guild, combined with the warmth and presence of trauma informed, relational psychotherapy and family support services.
January 2024: I have limited openings for new patients. You are welcome to contact me and I will respond about scheduling a consultation as I am able and will discuss your care needs and therapy goals. I have dedicated my 20 year long career to the premise that we must know what is possible and have capacity to do it before we can be free to choose. During my academic studies in Psychology, Philosophy, Religion, and Social Work I was introduced to the intersections of Queer and Gender theories and became ignited with the framework of knowledge, power, control, and paths to liberation, all of which continue to inform my practice.

Healing from trauma or any mental illness follows a similar path to the life you want to lead.
Your life may not be what you want it to be. You may be struggling with addiction, depression, anxiety, past or present trauma. You need someone to talk to, who will listen, not judge, who wants to help you find a way to a better life. I subscribe to the wise words of Viktor Frankl: "When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves." Let me help you meet that challenge. I strive to create a trusting relationship with my clients, which is the foundation that allows a successful outcome. I have extensive training in trauma and the symptoms that often result from these experiences.

I utilize therapeutic approaches such as Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, DBT and Motivational Interviewing to assist each individual with developing self-awareness.
Are you living a purpose filled life? A life that you enjoy waking up to and beginning your day with a strategic plan to live on purpose. At one point you felt optimistic about life then out of nowhere you were triggered by a memory from the past which led to your downward spiral of emotions. Now you are questioning your life's purpose and reason for existence. Or perhaps confused as to why you have experienced certain encounters leading you to feelings of stress, distant behavior, agitation, or perhaps hopeless.

Feeling different in a world that values conformity can be challenging, and adding traumatic experiences to the mix can make life feel unbearable.
Let's be real, life can be a bit heavy to deal with on your own. But here, you are welcome to be your full authentic self. You can just be you – no need to pretend you have it all figured out or to apologize for feeling overwhelmed. If you're seeking someone to sit with you through it all, to help you navigate your emotions, identity, and experiences, I'm here for you, especially if you're dealing with trauma. I believe in a strength-based approach to working together to shape your therapeutic experience. Your counseling journey will be all about you – your needs, your interests, your goals.

I believe every wound, block, or trauma has its natural movement toward integration if given the right support.
I am currently accepting new clients, and I always respond within 24 hours. I partner with adults of all ages who are seeking psychotherapy within a setting that’s able to hold the fullness of who they are and the larger arc of their path. Located on Pickards Mountain at the edge of Chapel Hill, I describe my approach as somatic, depth-oriented, and mindfulness-based. Another term I use is soulcentric. Why? Because the word soul points to the deeper dimensions of one’s life. It evokes the rich, sometimes veiled currents running through our lives and orients us toward our ever-unfolding authenticity and path.

In my practice as a psychologist, I partner with individual and couples clients who are living with the effects of trauma, mood disorders, anxiety, self-image difficulties, out-of-control sexual behavior/sexual addiction, and alcohol and/or substance use difficulties, as well as people engaging in self-harm and/or suicidal behavior.
When we come to therapy, often our choices have not led to the life we desire. Under the influence of anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress, or the allure of substances, pornography, spending, etc., it can seem like life is out of our control. Rather than be controlled, we desperately want to be free to pursue what is truly good. Therapy then is an opportunity to not only find freedom from mental turmoil, but to realign life toward what is worth pursuing. The goal, then, is not simply to “not feel” a certain way, but to be drawn into something much greater that transforms our mind, our relationships, our work, our spirit.

I take a goal-focused approach that can be best with clients who are looking for therapy with more structure or an end in sight. I'm resource oriented, person-centered, solutions focused, trauma informed, queer-identified and allied, and personally and professionally fluent in neurodiverse.

I'm comfortable working with issues such as depression, anxiety, life transitions, values clarification, domestic violence, trauma history, parenting issues, and other family or relationship dynamics.
I believe therapy should be a collaborative effort between client and therapist. While I may share some evidenced-based ideas during our sessions, only you are the expert on what works for you. My sessions will generally follow a cognitive behavioral approach, meaning that we will examine, and possibly shift, your thoughts and perspectives on life situations that are causing you enough distress to want to pursue change. Together we will form a plan of action that is the right fit for you at this point in time.

Psychotherapy is a collaborative experience in which you take an in-depth look at your life, perspectives and behaviors and explore what may or may not be working with a trained professional. Each individual experiences life in one's own unique way, with one's own set of personal values and goals. Sometimes life circumstances can create a conflict with a person's values. Sometimes people try their best and cannot change the way they feel. "Good people" can experience depression, anxiety, anger, grief, substance abuse, trauma and other circumstances, which, with the assistance of a trained professional, can be resolved.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
