During my therapeutic journey, I have used cognitive behavioral therapy, solution-focused along with motivational interviewing; however, it is a pleasure to adjust my therapeutic style to meet your specific need.
Hello! My name is Toni Bethea-Byrd and I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor. During the last 14 years, I have worked with individuals with a wide range of concerns including depression, mood disorders, and family relations issues. I combine different therapeutic approaches based on the client's presenting concerns, goals, and motivation, such as cognitive-behavioral, brief therapy, mindfulness, client-centered, and solution-focused therapy. I would be a good match for anyone interested in a counselor who provides a safe space for all individuals.

My clients can expect an environment free of judgment, full of understanding and empathy, where they can face the challenges that they have in a supportive environment. My personal background allows me to look at client issues from a different view and offer real world healing that meets the client where they are. My client’s come from various backgrounds, but all seeking to better understand themselves and a better way of coping. Because I’m seeing clients virtually, they feel freer to share more intimate and personal concerns that might be harder to talk about in person.

Working from a person-centered approach that lends itself to a humanistic intentionality, I model my therapeutic efforts in the practices of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), EMDR, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI) and all the skills, interventions, and framework that move between them.
Therapy can feel tough and intimidating, or scary and vulnerable. Yet, it's also a space for empowerment, validation, and healing . While I may have extensive training and experience in the field of mental health, I will never have expertise in a life that is entirely your own. Rather, I am here to shape and adapt therapy to the needs of every individual through guidance, empathy, skills building, distress tolerance, and emotion/trauma processing. I am here to help in every capacity I can offer; therefore, I invite any and all looking for help, insight, and a willingness to work toward an improved well-being.

Motivational Interviewing Therapists

How does motivational interviewing work?

Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathizes, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.

Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?

Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviors in children.

How long does motivational interviewing last?

Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.

What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?

In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behavior.
