Reviving the love, joy, and connection in your romantic relationship is possible.
The connection is lost, communication broken, and intimacy scarce. How did we end up here in our relationship? Trying to discuss anything ourselves deteriorates into a bickering episode. Our impatience and frustration don’t allow for listening and compromise. We just don't seem to be on the same page anymore. Trying to fall asleep at night is next to impossible as the hurtful argument from earlier replays over and over. With so many unmet expectations and a lack of fulfillment, we are drifting further apart and feeling more alone. It’s been like this for such a long time, where do we begin to find the love and bond we once had?

I am kink-affirming, sex-positive, committed to anti-racism, celebratory of all queer identities, and work with people of all genders and partners in a variety of relationship structures (including monogamous, ethically non-monogamous, and poly relationships).
My name is Thorne (they/them) and I am a white, queer, non-binary licensed clinical social worker associate (LCSWA) offering both individuals and couples/ relationship therapy in Durham, NC. My work is grounded in fierce compassion and a belief that everyone is capable of healing and feeling like they belong. It is my experience that one of the key elements of transformative therapy is our relationship; that we are a good “fit” and that you feel safe to share your joy, anger, grief, and tears. My style is gentle, attentive, playful, and person-centered–drawing from relational, narrative, and attachment-based therapy approaches.

Do you struggle to get your needs met in your relationships? Perhaps you try repeatedly and fail to achieve harmony? I have a special interest in working with individuals experiencing unhappiness in their important relationships. When my clients first come in, they may feel they are doing the heavy lifting and hope that things will change. Their relationship dissatisfaction gets in the way of the life they want in so many ways. They aren’t the person they strive to be according to their values. They feel like they are failing as a partner and in life. Greater self-confidence and fulfillment are attainable.

I see myself as a facilitator within the therapeutic relationship, providing objective guidance and support, as well as, challenging unhealthy thought processes, while creating a warm, accepting, and soothing environment in which to work.
I enjoy working with adolescents, adults, and couples. Compassion, warmth, and objectivity are what I offer to everyone that walks into my practice, physically or virtually. Clients are accepted for who they are while receiving encouragement to become self-aware, grow and thrive within their communities. My goal is to create a safe space for reviving the soul (mind, will, and emotions); rebuilding weakened and destroyed personal, family and social foundations; (revealing) putting into proper perspective life's challenges and using them effectively to advance, bringing about restoration of the total being.

People come to therapy because they want to feel better. Maybe it's relationship problems or anxiety/depression, but whatever the reason, life has become uncomfortable or painfull. Most people want more understanding of themselves and their situation. That being said change is what we all seek in therapy.Making your life work better is the goal. My therapy will help you alter self-defeating ways, get a more realistic and accurate perspective, gain insight that leads to improving the quality of your life.

Whether you're struggling with overcoming trauma, unhealthy relationship patterns, drinking a little too much or using other substances, it is important that you know you don't have to be alone in this journey.
Is worry or anxiety disrupting your life? Does it feel like no matter what you try, nothing works? Are you struggling to change habits that only seem to make things worse? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you have made the right choice by being here. Maybe you've resorted to drinking, prescriptions or marijuana to feel some relief. Maybe it's time you got some help. And I know this is hard. You've likely been thinking about seeking help for months, maybe even longer. But I'm so glad you found me and have taken the courageous step of being here.

I believe in the power of the professional therapeutic relationship to support clients with safety, unconditional positive regard, and autonomy, and I use a collaborative approach to process current stressors, seek clarity, and develop goals for change.
Beginning the search for a therapist can feel daunting. You've taken the first step on a path to growth, healing, and change. Through my experience and training as an educator and as a mental health professional, I have discovered the power of human connection and the transformation we can experience when we are seen, heard, and supported without condition or judgement. I support adolescents and adults struggling with depression, anxiety, life transitions, grief, identity, and environmental stressors, and partnered folks who feel stuck in patterns that no longer work for their relationship.

I am a specialist in: personal and professional relationship issues; children/adolescents/families; psychological, educational, and forensic evaluations; and personal growth pursuits.
With over 25 years of experience, I subscribe to a solution-focus philosophy, in which I strive to address the problem with you as quickly as possible, but with enough depth to avoid relapse. I set goals early in treatment with adults and couples, or with children/teenagers and their families, so we can find successful solutions and change behavior problems, emotional difficulties, academic difficulties, or family problems as soon as possible. I love people and people's stories, and am always truly and deeply interested in the story of every child, teen, and adult I meet! I also think laughter is therapeutic and therapy can be fun.

By first focusing on building a sense of safety and secure attachment in the therapeutic relationship, we will be able to explore the places in life where you feel stuck, in pain, and unfulfilled.
As a psychodynamic and attachment oriented therapist, I believe that the foundation of therapeutic treatment is a safe and supportive relationship between therapist and client. The process of treatment often uses the therapeutic relationship itself to uncover relational patterns from earlier in life that may be causing pain or dysfunction in the present day. By identifying the historical antecedent to a seemingly confusing or inappropriate emotional response, client and therapist are able to disrupt maladaptive patterns and choose new, more values congruent responses.

I believe the relationship between a person and their own self is crucial to mental health.
Changes often raise fear and curiosity. I particularly enjoy working with clients who are full of curiosities and who are willing to explore unknowns and perceive unknowns as gifts. I am interested in supporting clients’ fear related to changes, and helping clients work on variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, adjustment issues, traumas, identity development (e.g., sexual orientation and cultural identities), etc. Prior to arriving in the US, I was a mental health provider in Taiwan. In my early career, I practiced child play therapy and animal-assisted psychotherapy.

Relationship Issues Therapists
While need for human connection appears to be innate, the ability to form healthy, loving relationships is learned. Some evidence suggests that the ability to form a stable relationship starts to form in infancy, in a child's earliest experiences with a caregiver who reliably meets the infant's needs for food, care, warmth, protection, stimulation, and social contact. Such relationships are not destiny, but they are theorized to establish deeply ingrained patterns of relating to others. The end of a relationship, however, is often a source of great psychological anguish.
