The significant influences on my work other than the clients I have worked with over the past 25 years are: intensive training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, a strong backgroup in working with social factors that can impact psychological difficulties such as racism and sexism, and extensive experience with mindfulness-based approaches.
In my practice I focus on helping people to free the present from the long term effects of problematic early life experiences. In psychotherapy, we work to create space for thoughts, feelings, and memories to emerge and to be understood. Understanding supports developing new skills which allow for new and more positive choices to be made based in the present, cleared of the distortions of the past. I offer a brief telephone consultation for potential clients.

I draw from several therapy approaches including relational, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral (CBT), and mindfulness therapies.
I approach therapy as a collaborative partnership. My style is authentic, nonjudgmental, and compassionate. I think therapy should not be some mysterious process so I provide feedback and tools to help you make changes. Together we identify patterns in your life that are no longer working for you and find new ways of living that give you more of what you want. In my practice I offer individual psychotherapy to adults in person and via tele therapy.

I use a blend of psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral techniques, tailored to the individual person.
I believe my role as a therapist is to provide a safe, supportive space where you can talk over your difficulties, and I in turn provide perspective, insight, and creative problem-solving strategies. With over 25 years of experience, I have many therapeutic approaches available. Past clients have told me that they appreciate my ability to listen reflectively but still provide active feedback and ideas that allow them to see a new angle on their problems and begin to change. I can be most helpful with relationship issues and with anxiety and depression. I have particular specialties in helping women with mid-life transition issues.

Are you experiencing loss of emotional connection in your relationship? Is that lack of connection leading to loss of interest in physical intimacy? Or, perhaps communication with your partner feels like you are gridlocked in the same argument over and over? Using The Gottman Method, I work with couples who are striving to rebuild their connection, improve their communication, and manage conflict. I can help you develop tools for deeper, richer emotional connections.

I am passionate about supporting people who range in age from early childhood through adulthood. My background in child psychology informs my work with adults as well, as I am always considering how a person's developmental path and early relationships have shaped them. In therapy, I strive to bring empathy, warmth, and humor to the process. You can expect me to be curious about and accepting of your experiences as I support you in actively working towards change. I am sensitive to issues related to disability, immigration, and non-traditional forms of family building, and welcome all to my practice.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
