I would be honored to connect with you. I am passionate about working with adults (21+) on concerns related to anxiety, rumination, perfectionism, grief, life transitions, family of origin, and relationship issues. I also have experience supporting folks in care-giving roles with loved ones living with dementia. I aim to hold safe and supportive space to explore emotions, experiences, and patterns; to see ourselves and our relationships more clearly; and to envision and engage in meaningful and vibrant ways of moving through whatever we may be experiencing at any stage of life.

I welcome and work with adults from all backgrounds and stages of life. I am LGBTQIA+ affirming, engaged in anti-racist work, and approach my clients with empathy, nonjudgement, and respect for their strengths. As a former professor who left academia, I value supporting clients through big decisions, school or career stress, and life transitions. I view mental health difficulties such as anxiety, depression, burnout, and trauma as responses to individual, social, and environmental factors, rather than 'personal' issues. Consequently, I help clients make changes in their own habits, their relationships, and their wider contexts.

Some people experience more trauma than others. Success in therapy is feeling comfortable telling me what’s working for you—but also what isn’t working. It’s about what we can accomplish together to help you face hardship and emerge stronger and with greater purpose. That doesn’t mean your worst day is behind you. But I would like the opportunity to help you see the path that makes sense to you, and to provide you with tools that will help you daily. There is no handbook to make things easier, but there is a cooperation between us that forges strength out of your individuality and empowers you to see through the chaos into the calm.

I work with adults of all ages who find themselves overwhelmed by situations in their lives. The issues might involve end of relationships, serious health conditions, conflict in relationships, and grief. Adults have multiple responsibilities that include earning a living, meeting financial expenses, caring for children and older family members. It is natural that we forget to think about ourselves. We may become irritable, sad, resentful, and tired all the time. We want someone who can listen without judging. We want a therapist who "gets us", who understands our pain, and wants to help us move forward.

Are you going through a transition in your career, relationships, family? You're a leader, but feel uncertain. Perhaps you don't like your job, but are afraid to rock the boat. Are you retiring and don't know what's next? Maybe you are leaving, starting, or struggling in a relationship and want to do it "right" this time. All Transitions have stages we need to address. Our past experiences create our lenses of fear or excitement about the future. Knowing your old patterns will help you to create the life YOU want now. We can work 1-1, with a partner, a team or a family to see the old patterns and create new, successful ones.

I am a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist. My work supports individuals, couples, families and small businesses seeking to unlock their ability to access the best they have to offer. We all need to experience a secure bond with another to provide a safe haven for comfort and support and a secure base to go out into the world. Together, we can find the secure bond, fun, love, and caring masked by conflicts, connect you with the resources we are all born with that build self esteem, strengthen relationships, bring into awareness and transform old and familiar patterns of communication that are defensive rather than connecting.

Dementia Therapists

Can dementia patients benefit from counseling?

Dementia patients can often benefit significantly from counseling. While neurologists typically treat dementia itself, counselors provide crucial emotional support for patients and their families. Therapists specializing in dementia can help clients navigate aging, end-of-life issues, social isolation, sleep challenges, and grief. They can also assist clients in adapting to the disease by addressing caregiving concerns and supporting family members. Counselors will often also collaborate with a patient's neurologist or other medical providers to manage dementia symptoms and medication needs.

How can you tell if someone has dementia or Alzheimer's?

To determine if someone has dementia or Alzheimer's disease, there are several signs and diagnostic methods that medical professionals use. Early signs of dementia often include memory loss, difficulty with problem-solving, and challenges in completing familiar tasks. Diagnosing dementia or Alzheimer's requires a comprehensive approach, as there is no single definitive test, and initial diagnosis can sometimes be difficult as symptoms tend to worsen progressively over time. To make a diagnosis, medical professionals typically use a combination of methods, including standardized questionnaires and cognitive tests to assess memory, attention, and problem-solving skills, psychiatric evaluations to understand mental health status, brain scans to look for physical changes in the brain, as well as other medical tests to rule out other conditions.

What are the first-line treatment options for Alzheimer’s disease?

There is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, but catching the disease in its early-to-moderate phases can be beneficial in order to initiate first-line treatments to help manage symptoms. Medications such as galantamine, rivastigmine, and donepezil are examples of cholinesterase inhibitors that are commonly prescribed for Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, working with a therapist or social worker can also often help patients with the disease address common behavioral and lifestyle concerns, such as anxiety, depression, irritability, sleep problems, social support, and housing changes.

When to seek treatment for Alzheimer’s?

It’s best to seek treatment at the first signs of Alzheimer's. Early warning signs of Alzheimer’s include memory problems, such as forgetting appointments or directions, as well as trouble concentrating, paying attention, retrieving words, and carrying out daily household tasks. An early diagnosis can help people slow the progression of the disease with medication and plan for the future in terms of housing, social/caregiving support, and finances.
