Are you experiencing a sense of disconnection from yourself and those around you? Do you often prioritize others' needs over your own? Are you questioning why life doesn't feel as fulfilling or joyful as you hoped? In today's uncertain times, many people are grappling with feelings of anxiety and overwhelm, unsure of how to navigate their relationships, careers, and overall well-being. Ignoring your own needs and neglecting self-care can have lasting consequences on your mental and physical health. I believe that achieving a better quality of life shouldn't feel like an uphill battle.

I bring a unique blend of experiences to my role as a therapist. I’m a former infantry soldier, current U.S. Army Chaplain of 19+ years, and therapist. As a war time veteran, I understand the challenges of navigating through difficult times. It isn’t easy to admit we might need help, that we have fears that no one will understand what we’re experiencing, or if I seek help some people may judge us. If we’re able to get past those initial thoughts of judgment, fear, or vulnerability we may find that there are people out there that will hear us, be with us, and help us during our difficult times. I would like to be that person for you.

Therapy offers a profound opportunity to cultivate self-awareness, particularly in recognizing how negative beliefs and thought patterns about yourself and others can detrimentally impact the quality of your life. I have earned advanced clinical licensure and board certification (BCD) in both Florida and North Carolina. In addition to my counseling practice, I am a Qualified Clinical Supervisor for the State, mentoring and coaching aspiring Mental Health Counselors and Clinical Social Workers.

Now accepting new individual therapy clients for telehealth sessions! By now, you feel like the pain will never go away. It's like being weighted down, unable to breathe, unable to act. There is hope! I work with individuals (typically age 16 and up) seeking to improve mood, thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. I can help you understand your unique situation, find a healthier new perspective, and develop the tools you need to alleviate your suffering and keep it from returning.

I am often asked why I chose to be a therapist. My answer is always the same. I understand what it feels like to go through something difficult, new, or challenging alone. Therapy is my passion, and serving as a guide/supportive presence to help clients reach their goals is my sole purpose in treatment. I believe that every client is an expert regarding their life experiences. Therefore, therapy is a collaborative effort, so I am always open to feedback from clients in order to provide the best service for each individual.

As a therapist, I feel the most genuine offering I can provide is a non judgmental, culturally mindful approach that connects with you as the client wherever you are in your individual journey. I believe in using the strengths that you already have to serve as the foundation of where we will go. I show up in every session with the intent of connecting from a place of authenticity, empathy, and mindfulness.

I help men of all ages work through social, romantic, family, and career challenges by improving their sense of meaning, knowledge, and self awareness during difficult times. Many of my clients suffer from mental health symptoms (general or social anxiety, depression, anger) that have negative effects on their self esteem and relationships. This creates a feedback loop that feels difficult to break, but is possible to overcome with the right environment, guidance, and an openness to change.

On the surface; you seem fine, but inside, you have a self-critical voice that won’t let up. You have a lot of feelings that you feel deeply. This can be a strength but it can also leave you feeling confused about why others don't see what you see. Others may have told you that you are too sensitive but you also may be the person that they come to for advice or support. Maybe you have been hesitant to try counseling because you feel that you should be able to figure this out yourself.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
