At Sanctuary Counseling Group, we believe in creating therapeutic relationships with our clients that promote the healing of heart, mind, and soul. Therapy is a Sacred Space. As a systemic therapist, I welcome individuals, couples, children, and family systems into the room. I believe in creating a non-judgmental and open context that will often draw from Emotionally Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Experiential Therapy, and Mindfulness-based strategies. I received my Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pfeiffer University and was selected as the Student of the Year by the faculty.

I’m passionate about therapy as a tool for helping young people develop and grow. Adolescence through young adulthood can be a challenging period of time for people, especially in a post-pandemic world. I believe therapy can be a positive tool for teenagers and young adults when they are met where they are, and are given a space to be authentic, vulnerable, and genuine.

I offer counseling that allows the client to choose their path to more effective living by their own definition. If they haven't determined that definition, my role is to provide the opportunity to explore their options and guide experiences to facilitate reflection and action. I work very well with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, and related disorders. I also enjoy exploring the mind-body connection with clients experiencing eating disorders and other related concerns. As a veteran, one of my motivations to begin counseling was to support active service members, Veterans, and their families.

If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, a loss of self-worth, or a loss of hope, I can help. If you are tired of being plagued by uncontrollable addictive behaviors, betrayal trauma, triggers, negative thoughts, an inability to turn off your brain, or low self-esteem, I can help. Identifying the source and reprocessing memories helps eliminate the pain. I use EMDR to resolve past trauma and present difficulties. EMDR often helps get to the source of your trauma and distress. I offer EMDR for NC residents in the office and online.

Whatever it is that has prompted you to seek the support of a therapist at this time, I commend you for taking such an important first step. I see this as a sign of strength, and a commitment to address the challenges and obstacles you are currently facing. Having been in my own counseling at pivotal times throughout my life, I have a deep respect for the therapeutic process. It is only through vulnerability and authentic connection that we can truly cultivate the best versions of ourselves, and the counseling process provides a powerful vehicle for doing so. It would be my honor to assist you in this capacity.

My program is most successful with people who recognize they need change, are ready to change, and believe it’s possible. They can identify at least one problem or unreached goal and are committed to learning something new. The clients that experience the fastest changes are those most willing to consider new perspectives about their pain or people and try new approaches. We're not going to talk a lot about the whys, we'll address the what - what is wrong and what you want instead. If you're ready to release the trauma and embrace joy, forgiveness, and freedom, you're a great fit!

You already have the answers you need. All you need is someone to listen as you figure out what you already know or encourage you to make the changes you need. You may need permission to take a step, set a boundary, or leave an unhealthy relationship. Counseling allows you to let down walls, process pain, and gain insight from a trusted, neutral person without fear of judgment. I work with adults and couples experiencing relational pain, anxiety, depression, and various life transitions - including premarital. You can always reach out, and I can help determine if we're a good fit. If not, I'll help you find someone who is.

I specialize in empowering compassionate young women who are struggling with anxiety, body image, and eating disorders to find peace and acceptance within themselves and regain self-trust. Always trying to be "perfect" is exhausting. Even though you're a high-achiever, you may still feel like you're not good enough, compare yourself to others, and ruminate over past mistakes. Maybe you notice those negative thoughts translate into how you perceive yourself physically and you struggle to accept yourself.

You've worked hard for the peaceful existence that you deserve and yet, you wake up feeling like it’s Groundhog day saying hello to anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma, yet again. You’ve tried all of the conventional things people have said to do like “go to the gym”, “make friends”, “have a drink to relax”, and yet life still isn't quite what you’ve envisioned and worked so hard for. Perhaps, some of the conventional pieces of advice have even backfired. You've found that you're snapping at people you love, your eating patterns have become emotionally driven, online shopping and endless scrolling is a battle...sound familiar?

With additional training and a certificate in equine assisted growth and learning (EAGALA), I have experience in working with children, teens and parents who are experiencing difficulties with life challenges by utilizing this experiential therapy model with horses.
It takes a village to raise children and I am honored to be a resource for families during their journey. Whether your child is experiencing difficulties managing his or her emotions, has problems with impulsivity, is processing a traumatic event, or is lacking self esteem, there are strategies that can help. I utilize a person centered approach to counseling, meaning I strive to meet my clients where they are and encourage them to build on their natural abilities. I incorporate experiential techniques and cognitive behavioral skills into sessions to help my clients feel empowered to utilize these skills in their day to day life.

Experiential Therapy

How does experiential therapy work?

Experiential therapy works by allowing an individual to use their creativity to re-imagine themselves and their lives in an effort to process their emotions. Experiential therapy may take many forms, including engaging clients through art, re-enactments, role-playing, music, or forms of physical recreation. By focusing on these activities, experiential therapists help individuals identify the emotions they associate with previous experiences and work together to cope with negative reactions, like fear, anger, or shame.

Is experiential therapy evidence-based?

Experiential therapy incorporates many therapy modalities, some of which have been more closely researched than others. Music therapy, for example, has been shown to help with sleep problems. Some studies find that art therapy can be beneficial for those with eating disorders or personality disorders, while other research suggests that such approaches have little impact.

How long does experiential therapy last?

The duration of experiential therapy will depend on the type of therapy used as well as the severity of the challenges an individual faces. Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Art therapy may comprise 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or on an as-needed basis. For each therapy type, clients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

Does experiential therapy help with trauma?

Trauma is one area where experiential therapy may be useful. Traumatic experiences such as combat or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating visual art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. Listening to music can be relaxing, while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, or who have been physically or emotionally abused.
