Do you constantly worry that you are a “bad mom?” Do you feel completely overwhelmed by parenting, like some moments are even painful to you? If so, you've come to the right place. Motherhood is one of the hardest and most overstimulating experiences a woman will ever know — especially when you're a mom with ADHD, autism, sensory processing challenges or other neurodivergent traits. When your unique nervous system is always feeling tapped out, it's no wonder you feel trapped in your life as a mom!

Clients I work with tend to be outsiders; some looking for community and some looking for clarity. They are people-pleasers struggling with self-esteem, anxiety, or depression. They are from families that lack boundaries, and might be adult children of substance users. They are couples navigating communication differences, life changes, or nontraditional relationships. They might be queer, neurodivergent, or questioning their gender. More often than not, they are looking for someone to support them without judgment, and help them feel less alone. If any of this sounds familiar, I'm glad you're here.

Hearing from the heart and seeking help with paralyzing personal challenges can be a daunting experience. Finding someone to connect with in the process of personal healing is half the battle to a solution. Keeping the person at the center of the therapeutic process is a goal for me. I have employed this approach for over 16 years of practice in Western NC. While this majestic mountain setting is a place of unique beauty it is not free of personal challenges that may need a calm and skilled approach to navigating life' s challenges.

Change is hard. Our nervous systems can interpret even the most well-intentioned changes as threats, which means sometimes it can be difficult to understand why we feel or behave the way we do. I deeply respect that, as social creatures, we are wired to process transitions through connection with others. I often find that what my clients believe are character flaws are actually intelligent coping responses—they served an important purpose at one point but are no longer helpful in their current lives.

When certain parts of our life feel out of control, it creates stress that impacts other areas of our life. Seeking help can feel like a chore. Not only do you have to find a therapist that feels like a good fit, but you have to tell your story to a stranger. I know all of this, and I want to make it feel easy, productive, and worth your time. I enjoy helping all people, but some of my refined interests include traumatic stress, attachment injuries, SUD's, and life transitions. I can help adults, teens, kids, couples and families. In my work with teens, I have interest and experience in helping adoptees and transnational adoptees.

You are tired of feeling so overwhelmed and insecure. You look around and wonder how people seem to be handling things so differently than you are. You may feel too sensitive, tender, or hyperaware in your relationships, at work or school, or when taking in the state of the world. It is challenging to make choices, really feel like yourself, connect with others, or just get a break. You keep trying to fix things with varied success but keep feeling like you are hitting walls. However, you are ready to give yourself a little attention and to see if you can respond to life in new ways to feel more alive, loved, and free.

I support adults navigating a variety of issues, including chronic pain and chronic illness, depression and grief, dissociative conditions, complex trauma, relationship challenges, searches for meaning, and family of origin concerns. Trained in depth psychology, I am an ideal fit for anyone who is engaged in the process of self-understanding, curious about life, and seeking to be known. I believe the potential for deep healing, connection, and revitalization exists within this work. My approach, while holistic, is rooted in relational psychoanalysis and the belief that talking—about questions and issues that matter—can be curative.

Autism Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
