My therapeutic style is guided by a trauma-informed lens, rooted in feminist multicultural therapy.
Life and change are hard. You are burdened by all of the expectations around you; work, family, and cultural pressures to act/live your life a certain way. Maybe you feel like you don’t fully belong and you’re stressed. I bet that you’re also having a hard time feeling happy. I help my clients live a more authentic life for themselves while also honoring their values and culture. My goal is to support you in gently peeling back the layers, navigating what life throws your way, and teaching you skills to manage all of the stress.

My clients often come to therapy stating their lives feel consistently chaotic and out of control. It seems no matter what they have tried, they can't escape from recurrent depression and major ups and downs in their mood. They often feel even the most minor situation triggers intense emotional pain. They describe significant difficulty within their relationships and report at times lashing out in anger because of feeling unheard, empty, and disconnected from their real self. They may even try to regain control of their life and emotions through self-destructive behaviors like drinking too much or hurting themself.

If you're searching for a therapist you know there has to be a good fit between the two of you in order for that partnership to be successful. I don't believe there is a one size fits all when it comes to life's challenges and no one size fits all when I work with clients. Life has a habit of throwing us a curve ball on occasion and it's nice to work through that with someone who isn't in the middle of your life. Reach out and let's talk. I take a strength-based approach and use various modalities to facilitate insight, reach personal goals, and work through issues.

I specialize in women's mental health and only treat women. Psychology is a science and an art. I see therapy through the same lens. As specific as the brain can be, there also has to be some flexibility to really understand how someone thinks. I worked in psychology research for 10 years and have been a therapist for 9 years. I am a National Certified Counselor, a Qualified Supervisor, and will be finishing my PhD in 2025. My research and focus in therapy is centered around women’s issues, our cognitive processing, and how our social environment affects our lives.

I believe in the healing power of relationships. Humans have a biological need to find safety through connection with others. Disconnection in relationships may leave you feeling hopeless. Together, we will look at your relationship to self and how this impacts navigating relationships with others. I am trained in taking this approach for individual, couples, and family therapy. If you have difficulty having a healthy relationship to your body and food, I am also pursuing a certification in intuitive eating principles and integrate these into my practice with clients as needed.

I work with clients who are grappling with anxiety, depression, and stress. Many are dealing with changes in their family, including substance use, codependency, and relationship issues. My clients are diverse but they all want to feel understood and validated. The most important part of therapy is the rapport between the clinician and the client, known as unconditional positive regard. The client needs to feel supported so they can discuss the presenting problem. Throughout this process, I strive to be warm, empathetic, and knowledgeable. Previous clients have described me as approachable, patient, and open minded.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
