Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists in Cary, NC
I have specialized training in treating OCD using ERP and ACT strategies and in treating trauma-related symptoms using CPT or PE.
Therapy is a powerful tool that can help you harness your strengths, heal from trauma, become more fully present, develop more authentic connections, relate to your emotions as allies instead of enemies, and learn to use your values to ground and guide you. In my work as a clinical psychologist, I offer individual therapy for adults (18+) presenting with a variety of challenges, including OCD, trauma, anxiety, ADHD, relationship/interpersonal concerns, stress management, life transitions, depression, and emotion regulation difficulties.

You matter. You're not alone! I know life can feel frantic and overwhelming. Anxiety and toxic relationships are the norm these days. It's common for go-to ways of coping to buckle under stress. I've been there. I'm Maureen and have been a therapist for 20 years in North Carolina (LCMHC). I've always been passionate about mental health. After years of working as a therapist, I created Best Self Therapy and Oak City Wellness Center for OCD & Anxiety to accomplish my mission of helping adults, teens, and couples thrive in a frantic world.

Your mind has been pushing you around with negative thoughts. You have tried to "be more positive" but that hasn't worked. You are having problems in your relationships and some days feel like a ride on an emotional rollercoaster. You know something needs to change but you aren't sure what. You are feeling stuck.

I work with issues including anxiety, OCD, eating disorders, trauma, and grief.
You’re holding everything together nicely on the outside - work, school, family, everyday tasks - but on the inside, you feel like you could break down at any moment. Perhaps you feel like you work hard at being perfect but never measure up to anyone's standards. Or maybe your anxiety and intrusive thoughts have become overwhelming and time-consuming. My goal is to help you find healing and wholeness, and silence that inner voice of worry and negativity. No matter what you are experiencing, there is still hope, and I would love to support you and work with you to achieve your goals while creating a safe space for you to heal.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists
How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
