Do you struggle with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma/PTSD, motivation, communication issues, or a loss of a sense of self that affects your day-to-day life, relationships or ability to function? Now more than ever, individuals and those in relationship, are feeling the effects of living in a world that sometimes feels like it doesn’t quite fit them, they feel overwhelmed by the challenges of life, or feel unhappy in their current life situations. I believe change is possible, that there is hope, and that there are answers to be found within yourself.

Sometimes we are submerged in complicated feelings that are confusing and scary. This is actually a window into some of the core truths of our inner lives, of internalized relationships, longings, and past experiences. I accompany people through a deep exploration of this inner life and provide a supportive space to understand the unconscious, move through stuck points, and emerge to more genuinely appreciate your life.

Hearing from the heart and seeking help with paralyzing personal challenges can be a daunting experience. Finding someone to connect with in the process of personal healing is half the battle to a solution. Keeping the person at the center of the therapeutic process is a goal for me. I have employed this approach for over 16 years of practice in Western NC. While this majestic mountain setting is a place of unique beauty it is not free of personal challenges that may need a calm and skilled approach to navigating life' s challenges.

My goal is to meet my clients in the moment they are in, and invite them into a deeply safe experience of expanded possibility and curiosity. Connected more deeply to themselves, crucial feelings, fundamental beliefs and significant memories can emerge and be held with respect and kindness. Important individual and relational needs and healing can then be discovered, recognized, and realized.

Do you have a traumatic past that you'd like to break free from? Perhaps you are finding it hard to forget about the trauma, or continue to be triggered by a past situation, such as abuse, medical trauma, or a traumatic birth? Even 'little t' traumas, such as divorce or infidelity can have long lasting effects. Or perhaps you have limiting beliefs about yourself that keep you stuck, such as 'I'm not good enough' or 'I have to be perfect'? If so, an EMDR Intensive could be a great fit for you. Many of my clients with these issues have felt relief after just one 4 hour session!

I have also been afforded the opportunity to treat diagnosis including: depression, bipolar disorder, mood disorder, TBI, schizophrenia, PTSD, and ADD.
I am honored to be of service to you. I know that trauma and substance abuse and addiction can wreak havoc in one's life. Many of client's find themselves faced with challenges of having to restart their lives during mental challenges and addiction; some may have to fight to regain custody of their children; many of them have co-occurring mental illness that has lead to substance abuse and/or addiction. For some, addiction comes by way of biological, environmental, and social influences, but from my experience, I have learned that mental illness was present before addiction became a factor. Take Control Today!

In addition to cognitive processing, I have experience practicing dialectical behavior therapy targeted to treat bipolar I, bipolar II, and borderline personality disorders.
Are you finding yourself in the “vicious cycle” of anxiety or depression? Do you feel like some days you are functioning on auto pilot? This can be incredibly draining. I have found that sometimes our experiences, whether good or bad, can shape the way our thought patterns affect our moods and decisions and too often these thought patterns tangle themselves in an ever-weaving web. I primarily practice from a cognitive processing perspective, which is intended to help you untangle that web and begin to remove yourself from the vicious cycle of maladaptive, anxiety and depression-invoking thoughts.

I have worked as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for over 23 years. I enjoy working with a wide range of individual concerns, including depression, anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, abuse/trauma, addictions, and phase of life issues. If you are looking for a therapist that can help you make the changes you desire, I believe I am the one for you. You want someone who can truly listen and understands the emotions and symptoms you are experiencing, but you also need someone to dive in with you to navigate a way through them. Whether you are looking for help in breaking free from your past, issues causing distress in the present, and/or future hopelessness concerns I can help. Through the use of CBT changing thoughts & behaviors that allow for having a happier emotional state, use of EMDR for bilateral stimulating processing, and nonjudgmental listening I will help.

Bipolar Disorder Therapists

What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?

Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.

What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?

Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.

What kinds of problems does therapy help with?

Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.

What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?

Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
