Throughout my career, I have worked with a range of issues and diagnoses, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, marriage/family/relationship issues, specific phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, grief and loss, self-esteem, and much more.
Stress, anxiety and other difficult emotions may be a normal part of life, but they don't have to be in the driver's seat on life's journey. Through my 25+ years of experience as a counselor and my personal experience of having to reclaim the driver's seat from debilitating anxiety/depression, I have learned the truth behind Marcel Proust's claim that "The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes". It is my goal to help people gain new "eyes" through which to view current or past experiences.

I believe that with all of the demands and expectations of life, it is important that every person identifies and secures a safe space. What is a safe space exactly, you may ask? A safe space refers to a mental and/or physical environment where an individual or group of people feel secure, protected, and free from harm and/or judgment. Creating a safe space within the therapeutic setting allows those involved to be their authentic self, while gaining comfortability with managing stress, challenging emotions and developing healthy coping skills. Not local, but in NC? I am happy to provide a safe virtual space for you as well!

Parenting has been challenging for a while now. Your child has become defiant, disrespectful, and seems to have anger outbursts most days of the week. You’ve read countless self-help tips on managing your child’s behavior- time outs, rewards, punishments, spankings. These things worked for a couple of weeks, but there have been no long-term results from any of them. You always end up back at square one. Although, you don’t want to admit it, you’ve begun to dislike your child. You feel desperate for a change in your child’s behavior. You also feel hopeless that a change is possible. Is this what parenting is supposed to be like?

Hi! My name is Madi Bryant and I am currently a student counselor here at Oasis Counseling Center. I am extremely excited and grateful to begin my counseling career with the Oasis team! I have always had a passion for helping others through times of crisis. I knew that I wanted to be a part of the counseling profession when my family experienced a traumatic event. From that moment, I knew that I would pursue counseling as my career. Furthermore, I have experienced a traumatic event and learned that reaching out for help is what got me through those difficult times. Growing up, I would feel stressed about certain things in my life.

Something feels off. Something in life just is not working. You feel defeated. Despite numerous successes or reasons you feel you should be happy, you are overcome with sadness, guilt, and shame. You find yourself uncomfortable in your own skin, leading you to avoid everyday life, or overindulging in drugs or alcohol to cope. You feel trapped, and unsure how to fix it. When you make the decision to seek help, it can be an intimidating and overwhelming step to take. As a therapist, I strive to create a space that is safe for clients to be themselves and realize their personal vision for change.

ADHD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
