I work with teens, young adults, and adults who are struggling with meeting their goals, maintaining healthy relationships, identity issues, and navigating the transitions and stressors life throws. I also enjoy working with couples who have hit road blocks and need guidance and a third party perspective. My approach is interpersonal and I offer a space for clients to gain feedback and accountability through the development of a strong therapeutic alliance. I lead an adult Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) group and incorporate skills training into my practice.

Addiction is heart breaking for the patient and their loved ones. We can decide on an avenue for treatment which may be a referral to medical detoxification or inpatient substance abuse centers. If we work together on an outpatient bases, while you stay at home, my clients are willing to dive into the difficult work of changing ideas, behaviors and results in their lives. Engaging in therapy asks that you be willing to take risks and change ideas as well as your actions. I will guide you through the process of exploring your personal goals and the barriers to reaching these goals without the use of mind/mood altering substances.

Therapy is a growth experience that can influence the way you view the world and yourself. As humans, we all experience times of discomfort and life transitions. Therapy is not only for those suffering from addiction or mental illness. It is also a way to gain skills, enhance your performance, and learn more about yourself. Barriers to becoming who you want to be can be explored in therapy and work to re-building life, relationships, and even your career.

My practice includes work with individuals, generally ages 18 and up, and couples. I was a Professor of Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte for many years, and now am the Executive Director of the Boulder Crest Institute for Posttraumatic Growth (see www.bouldercrest.org) where we serve veterans and first responders. With my own small practice, I make appointments with you myself, and there is no bureaucracy to deal with. I am on many insurance plans. I think you will find that working with me is comfortable and practical, and we start right away to discuss what your concerns are.

I am honored to be of service to you. I know that trauma and substance abuse and addiction can wreak havoc in one's life. Many of client's find themselves faced with challenges of having to restart their lives during mental challenges and addiction; some may have to fight to regain custody of their children; many of them have co-occurring mental illness that has lead to substance abuse and/or addiction. For some, addiction comes by way of biological, environmental, and social influences, but from my experience, I have learned that mental illness was present before addiction became a factor. Take Control Today!

I look forward to assisting you with developing the skills to live a more abundant life while implementing the tools that you already have! Life can be hard at times and with the right coping skills, life can be more manageable to those experiencing depression, grief, anxiety, substance use, and other mental health issues. Working with those who have experienced relationship issues, such as infidelity, abuse (domestic, verbal and/ or physical) can learn how to become a survivor instead of a victim. I know that building a healthy therapeutic relationship is the first step in the therapy process in a non-judgmental environment.

I work via telehealth and utilize existential and humanistic techniques within the specific modality of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), to help clients achieve their goals.
My ideal client is any adult looking to create change in their life by being willing to change how they relate to their internal thoughts and feelings. This has a wide application for individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, grief, life transitions, interpersonal difficulties or just the stress of a post-pandemic world. I have a particular passion for working with those who have experienced developmental trauma and are looking for new ways to relate to themselves and their pasts.

My approach with clients are evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral & Existential therapy for my individual clients & Gottman method for my couples.
Happiness often feels as if it belongs to everyone else. The steps you've taken seem to only go backwards, no matter the intent. Difficult situations and regretful choices trap us in hopelessness. You feel lost even though you feel as if you've been down every path. You are ready for something to change. One thing all my clients hear me say is that “it’s easier for us to choose to be miserable and remain where we are now; however, if we choose to be uncomfortable for just a few moments, we may achieve something we thought not possible.”

My style might be described as equally gentle and direct, and my approach is informed by person-centered, psychodynamic, and existential therapy.
Therapy helps us explore things that are too painful to be thought about alone. Together we’ll get curious about your lived experience and find a path toward meaning and hope.

I incorporate a variety of approaches, including psychodynamic, somatic, emotionally focused, existential, and Gestalt.
My approach is rooted in the experience and belief that we have the answers within. I want my clients to not only survive the challenges they are facing, but to thrive and live a life that they love. My clients are often incredibly intelligent, creative, and driven. I have seen my clients accomplish amazing things when they get clear on their goals and apply their gifts toward a fulfilling and meaningful life. My goal is to help you get beneath the layers (often thoughts, behaviors, and relationship patterns) and get down to your core. Much of our work focuses on aligning your decisions and actions with your own truth.

I use Existential theories, Narrative Therapy, and I have a lot of experience working with individuals who are managing life on the Autism Spectrum.
I am ready for the patient who is ready for the work. I came to this field after being inspired by some of the great forerunners of the field. Introspective work appeals to my sense of analytical inquiry. I am coming to each session with a readiness to tackle and analyze the problem that is getting between where you are and where you want to be. I love working with substance use/abuse behaviors and have spent a portion of my career investing in patients who are at all levels of recovery. I also enjoy working with patients who just want to make small changes.

Theoretically, I rely on a Gestalt approach and incorporate person-centered, narrative therapy, and existential therapy.
Sometimes life moves way too fast for us to keep up. This causes us to drift, disconnect, and retract. It’s difficult coping with these emotions while also trying to handle… well life, especially when you don’t have the right support system. I’m here to tell you that with the right guidance, you can take your life back into your own hands. With the right help, you can overcome your obstacles instead of letting them hold you back. It is all possible, it just starts with you.

Existential Therapists

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
