Life can knock you down and keep you there if you let it. I have been a social worker for 18 years, working alongside children and families to preserve wholeness and solidity while providing coping skills, intervention, and case management. I believe for every storm in our life, there is a bright rainbow at the end. Sometimes, we need a nonjudgmental person to lend an ear while discussing our past traumas, hurt, and issues we have endured. Therapy should be focusing on the healing of the past and moving forward to become the best version of ourselves, find our purpose and live it to the fullest.

My goal is to facilitate your natural capacity to heal, grow and change. I work with folks that have mental health diagnoses like PTSD, anxiety, or depression, more general life concerns like transitions, relationship issues and loss, or difficulties in recovery from addiction or active substance use or other compulsive behavior(s). I also work with people that experienced difficulty in early childhood in addition to trauma, which often presents as Complex PTSD. I believe that many of the issues that bring us to therapy are interpersonal and bring special attention to the unique power of relational process in therapy.

Hello! I’m Karin Connelly, PhD. I’d like to offer you a way to relax, better trust yourself and feel empowered in your life. Do the habitual feelings and beliefs about yourself and your potential keep interfering with your making the changes you want in your life? Do the same interpersonal dynamics keep playing out in your relationships, even when that still small voice inside you clearly points in a better direction? Is it hard to slow down and trust yourself enough to live more freely—to simply be relaxed and openhearted, experiencing life directly and in alignment with your purpose?

I am specifically trained to support people struggling with past and ongoing interpersonal violence; individuals experiencing symptoms including psychosis; hearing voices or seeing things others do not; anxiety; depression; and suicidal ideation or self-injurious behaviors.
Living with past/ongoing trauma or experiencing significant mental health symptoms can make life feel unmanageable. My practice is centered on the belief that we all have a version of wellness that is unique to us, and it is my role as a therapist to aid in connecting individuals to their whole, healthy selves. Life is full of challenges that can disrupt our well-being, and we are not meant to face these things alone. With support, challenges can become opportunities for healing and growth.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
