The last thing we wish for in the midst of struggle is to feel shame for our human experiences. We often benefit from having another person to partner with during our healing process. It is especially important that we are in the presence of a person who is genuine in creating a space for us that is safe, inclusive, and nurturing. I admire you for taking this step for yourself and I hope you might find it with me - where I will strive to facilitate an environment where you feel free enough to come as you are. I believe that together we can discover the type of love towards yourself that could lead you to a life filled with joy.

I am ready for the patient who is ready for the work. I came to this field after being inspired by some of the great forerunners of the field. Introspective work appeals to my sense of analytical inquiry. I am coming to each session with a readiness to tackle and analyze the problem that is getting between where you are and where you want to be. I love working with substance use/abuse behaviors and have spent a portion of my career investing in patients who are at all levels of recovery. I also enjoy working with patients who just want to make small changes.

Are you feeling unworthy of the life you are living or maybe incompetent in the role that you have? Maybe it feels like every thought that crosses your mind is a spiraling rabbit hole of worst-case scenarios, and it’s creating a barrier to reaching your fullest potential. Has it felt like you’ve been on an emotional roller coaster of sadness, anxiety, or confusion and you feel like the ride is never going to end? Perhaps an unsettling sense of wanting to isolate or build walls within your close relationships. You always make sure everyone else is taken care of first; however, you know it’s time for something different. Time for you.

Are you living with depression, anxiety, grief, addiction, lack of direction, trauma? I believe that we naturally feel a call to live meaningful, loving lives and know intuitively that this is our best path but we often will feel stuck, unsure, fearful and so take no action. Existential therapy calls this a restricted existence and believes the goal of all therapy is to remove the road blocks that are limiting you from moving toward living your best life.

We’re wired toward a sense of belonging and connection to ourselves and others, but we all have strategies to protect us and adapt to life's challenges. Sometimes these inadvertently impact our mental/emotional health and get in the way of the flow of life, leaving us feeling confused, stuck, or disconnected. Other times, those strategies feel suddenly inadequate in the face of circumstances outside of our control. Giving space to layered, complex thoughts, emotions, and experiences and experimenting with new ways of being with a compassionate, well-trained therapist can support you in navigating a life that feels more like yours.

You're just not feeling like yourself. You've been feeling anxious, irritated and out of sorts. In some ways, your life is pretty much where you hoped it would be, but on the inside you're feeling scared and a little lost. Maybe even lonely. You're a leader, and you juggle a lot. You're the "I can do hard things" kind of person... But you're not feeling much better. You've got little patience for your partner, your kids, your friends, and you're losing your focus at work. You want better ways to cope with these feelings and life's stress. And more than that, you want to grow beyond the pain, and the past, and find inner strength.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist and have been providing therapy services to children and families in the Asheville area since 2005. My work with children is an integration of person-centered and strengths based perspectives. I use both non-directive and Cognitive Behavioral based play therapy as well as expressive arts to offer children a voice in their struggle to express themselves and identify and process their feelings in a safe space. I believe that "radical acceptance" and a strong trusting relationship are key in helping children and heal and grow.

Let’s be honest, being a human is tough and at times, it might feel like it’s too much. Sometimes we find ourselves stuck in shame spirals or narratives about ourselves that at some point allowed us to endure life’s challenges but are no longer effective. We might turn to alcohol, relationships, drugs, social media, or work to soothe the parts of us that want relief. It’s okay to need support to unlearn these patterns and learn new ways of living that increases our sense of purpose. Everyone’s path looks different and you don’t have to navigate yours alone.

I believe in the natural healing capacity and basic wisdom of all human beings. Layers of confusion and unconscious wounds can disconnect us from our true selves, and we may end up feeling bad and acting in ways that hurt our relationships- with ourselves, with others, and with this magnificent planet. We become hard and out of touch with our lives and callings. Real, deep change is possible when we face ourselves and our challenges with honesty, willingness, and compassion. If you're struggling with existential confusion or you're feeling consistently sad, anxious, irritable or numb, I'd love to help.

I work primarily with Autistic and other neurodivergent folx who may feel less-than, not good enough, inherently wrong, etc.. I believe in using therapy as a means to help people find the tools within themselves to move toward positive mental health and overall wellness. I believe in support over solution; in walking with someone to face their unique issues however they need rather than “fixing” them. As a social worker, I consider the “whole person” and the systems impacting them to offer a positive therapeutic experience to every client and help them to feel seen, heard, and supported.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
