Hello! I’m Karin Connelly, PhD. I’d like to offer you a way to relax, better trust yourself and feel empowered in your life. Do the habitual feelings and beliefs about yourself and your potential keep interfering with your making the changes you want in your life? Do the same interpersonal dynamics keep playing out in your relationships, even when that still small voice inside you clearly points in a better direction? Is it hard to slow down and trust yourself enough to live more freely—to simply be relaxed and openhearted, experiencing life directly and in alignment with your purpose?

My name is Tedra Slade, LCSW licensed in the states of NC, OR & SC. My therapy sessions are designed to promote personal growth as defined by you. I believe that emotional and behavioral challenges are a result of our brains not working in a way that helps us achieve our goals. In therapy, you will learn ways to help your brain heal, reframe your thoughts, and learn how to cope with daily challenges. Making time for your mental well-being shows strength and is courageous! I enjoy helping people reach their potential by removing barriers and providing alternative ways to cope.

There are times in everyone's life when navigating day-to-day struggles and problems seem more than we can do on our own. Sometimes, we just need someone to talk to who will listen, not judge, and help us to find our way again.

Examining thoughts & feelings, mindfulness work, and addressing interpersonal issues are effective ways to treat anxiety & depression.
None of us go through life without experiencing changes or life transitions. We struggle with depression and fight off our anxiety. We go through our day on autopilot, lacking energy, and feeling hopeless. We isolate ourselves from friends and family, we feel misunderstood, or we temporarily escape reality & lessen our pain with alcohol, drugs, food, etc. Resisting change causes us pain and creates additional stress and anxiety in our lives. Acceptance and embracing change begins the healing. If we approach transitions with curiosity rather than fear, and intention rather than reluctance, we can respond to change and foster growth.

I utilize an interpersonal approach and an integrative style of counseling, drawing from several treatment modalities.
There is great potential for positive change within reach! Starting therapy is a courageous step toward a new beginning. Everyone has the ability to make positive changes (big or small) to bring about a more meaningful, balanced life. I offer a compassionate, nonjudgemental space to process difficult emotions and thought processes that feel heavy and burdensome. We'll work together to identify specific issues causing distress, recognize existing strengths to draw upon and develop new and effective coping strategies to reduce distress.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
