There's something you are seeking to understand and discover. Though you may not know exactly what that is at this time, the need and desire to search is there. Something is compelling you to begin the quest of transforming the old and heavy parts of yourself into a more insightful and refined whole. What is important is that you have decided to begin the quest of understanding your past and present, and determining your future.

My ideal client is willing to acknowledge their struggles and seek help to improve their quality of life. They want to find peace and fulfillment, to rekindle their childhood wonder of the world around them. They want to understand more about themselves. They want to cultivate stronger connections in their relationships. Simply put, they want to develop tools to manage their mental health and live authentically.

Many of my clients are active outdoors-oriented folks.
Therapy should be a space where you can freely explore your emotions, gain self-awareness, and explore the life you are living. As your therapist, I can help you identify patterns, explore emotions, offer support, & I can challenge you to live a life that is more aligned with your values. My approach is insight-oriented, which means we’ll work to uncover a deeper understanding of who you are, explore your emotions, & the experiences that shape your life. This is not "symptom management", but this depth approach to therapy can lead to lasting change.

There are many times throughout life that lead to challenges and struggles that can be difficult to navigate. Over my 20 years working in the mental health field I have helped people with a wide range of issues. I have found that developing a relationship based on empathy, insight and authenticity can allow for a plan to be put into place that can lead to lasting change. No matter if it is a new struggle that has surfaced or a long standing one I believe that I will be able to provide the necessary perspective to help you find the clarity and direction you are seeking.

Life is difficult--at times even overwhelming. You do not have to do it alone, but sometimes life situations prevent connecting in the ways you would like. We each have a unique story filled with highlights and lowlights. At times, you may find yourself creating ruts or being stuck in the trenches, only to find yourself there with a lack of hope. Let's find a path out of these ruts together by creating a more complete story allowing you to live most fully in the present.

I primarily focus on transitional coaching. This typically centers around moving into adulthood, marriage, fatherhood, changes in work, midlife or elderhood. Just moved to town...that counts too. Not exclusively, but I often connect the easiest with creative and independent business people. I am also passionate about supporting clients in preparing and integrating traditional medicine work.

Many of my clients have been in therapy before, and have found their problems to be recurring.
I approach every client with concern for immediate difficulties and symptoms, but also believe that one of the central tasks of therapy is to gain self knowledge and understanding. This might include acknowledging emotion, understanding avoidance, or identifying behavioral and relationship patterns. Research studies have demonstrated that focusing on relationships (past and present) increases the likelihood that therapeutic work will be effective.

You wish that thing that happened when you were a child/soldier/first responder/partner/friend would stop creating problems in your “now,” but it won't. You know trauma, shame, anxiety, addiction, guilt, and depression suck because one or more of these open, infected, invisible wounds are your constant, unwanted companions. They get in the way of the life you want for you and those you love. I create and guard the safe, supportive, judgement-free space where you can say anything...and be accepted. Discuss and make any decision....and be supported. You & this Preacher’s Kid/Actor/Homeless/Soldier/Veteran/Business man...now Therapist.

Reaching out for help when life hits hard can be intimidating. While it can be challenging to reach out, doing so may just be the best decision you can make. My goal is to make the process as inviting and warm as possible. I operate through a Biblical worldview, placing emphasis on spiritual and mental health. It is my joy in life to walk alongside others as they face challenges of all kinds. I have experience working with individuals across the lifespan, including teenagers and elderly. I enjoy and have found success working with couples on their marriages and I offer individual and family counseling.

These challenging times are an excellent time to focus within, on family, and couples work. My role as a therapist is strongly influenced by my experience as a husband and father. My approach is practical, sincere, strength-based and gentle, but challenging. With 18+ years experience, I provide therapy for adults, couples, teens and families. I excel in work with mood disorders, relationships, and trauma resiliency. I believe therapy includes both psychological and spiritual wholeness, which I strive to support in those from all walks of life.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
