I have experience in working with older kids (8+), teens, young adults and parents who are stuck in a cycle where they feel unable to change. Many of my clients are dealing with anxiety and depression, and many are questioning whether there is more underneath. I have helped many families navigate the life-changing process of discovering and dealing with new diagnoses of ADHD (in particular girls and women), high functioning autism spectrum, learning disabilities, gifted issues and self-harm. I also work with kids struggling with behavioral issues and provide parent classes titled "When Everything's a Battle" and other topics.

I believe that recovery is a process which requires active, continuous involvement from the client, the therapist, and the entire treatment team. According to this belief, the four stages of recovery are hope, empowerment, self-responsibility, and establishing a meaningful role in life. The individual most responsible for a successful treatment outcome is you (the client). With your consistent effort and willingness to engage with your therapist the kind of change you are hoping for can and will occur.

I work with individuals ages 14+ and I work with both men and women.
Now accepting new clients in Idaho & Montana. I've noticed a trend in our culture today where we often focus on the differences between people, but in reality we have a lot more in common. We are all going through life experiencing similar struggles with anxiety, depression, perfectionism, compariness, loneliness, etc. We also share so many life experiences and transitions with one another whether it's going through starting a career, marriage, divorce, parenthood, aging, losing a loved one, or having relationship difficulties, we can all relate and connect. Oftentimes though, we need additional support through these transitions.

I believe that individuals posses the strength within themselves to make the changes necessary to reach their desired goals. However, stress, trauma, life transition, grief/loss, etc. can make it difficult to identify and recognize these strengths and resources. Working in collaboration with my clients, I assist them in uncovering or rediscovering their inner resources and figuring out how they can be used to guide them toward the life they want to live. Through an individualized approach and nonjudgmental stance, I show my clients kindness, compassion, authenticity, validation, and unconditional positive regard.

Sarah Bigley, LCSW has worked in the mental health care field since 2014 and has been a therapist since 2019. Sarah has been passionate about psychology since she was a kid and reading about how the brain works. Once in undergraduate, she began to question how we can use this knowledge to help make a positive impact in people’s lives. After growing and learning in this field, Sarah decided to become a social worker to provide therapy to adolescents and their families. When Sarah is not working, she can be found playing video games, enjoying the outdoors, playing with her cat, or spending time with family.

Therapy is a journey to embrace our authentic selves, no matter our back story. Problems that we struggle with do not form our whole identity and are usually adaptations that were originally protective strategies. My approach combines many different modalities that help with panic attacks, anxiety, depression, and PTSD, as well as problems caused by addiction. I have limited in-person availability, however, I have found that telehealth can be just as effective as in-person counseling in many cases. My telehealth clients also have first priority for booking in person appointments as they become available. Free consultation available.

At this time, I am exclusively a Telehealth provider for Montana clients. It is one of the most profound honors of my life the last 18 years to have people trust me with their deepest wounds and to share their journeys of courage. I have learned the importance of being lost, the language of rain and storms, and the deep echoing of the mourning howl. I believe that by allowing and accepting the mystery of loss with it's own timing, we have a chance to claim our path, our symbols. In order to become whole, the shadow and the light must be recognized, all must be explored.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
