Julie works with children, teenagers, adults, families and couples seeking counseling. Julie aligns with the theory of Emotionally Focused Therapy and believes that emotion is the body's expression of need. Exploration of triggers and behaviors related to emotion allow the client to begin to better understand themselves and how they relate to others. Connection and comfort are key to feeling safe and loved and in having a sense of belonging. Identifying emotions, learning to experience the emotion, and gaining awareness of what emotions arise are steps in accepting the given of life, being vulnerable, and sustaining connection.

I work to strengthen mental wellness and treat conditions that contribute to unwanted thoughts, feelings and behaviors. In therapy you will be invited to explore what is not working for you and find new ways to cope and manage. My belief is people often get stuck because of what is happening outside of their conscious awareness. I use current research and brain science to facilitate healing. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. I am engaged in 20+ hours of continuing education each year through professional conferences and trainings.

Not accepting new clients
On Maternity Leave until January 2025: I became a therapist to help others find the path not taken. I believe that your growth is an adventure, not a burden. When we approach our lives and loved ones through the lens of discovery, we give ourselves and others permission to be imperfect. We can accept that we may not have the skills needed to have the relationships that we want, and we can strive to learn them. There should be no shame in saying, “I do not know”. Do you know how to comfort yourself when you are disappointed? Do you know how to support someone that is struggling? Do you know how to care for someone who is hurting?

I work with individuals and couples experiencing a wide range of issues such as depression, anxiety, life transitions, or noticing continued patterns of conflict. Whatever is bringing you to counseling, we can work together to discuss what might benefit you the most at this time in life. Your willingness to seek help opens the door to discovering how you might create the change you wish for yourself, whether you're looking to explore something that has been deeply impactful, better understand yourself, learn how to effectively communicate and feel connected in your relationships, or feel like 'you' again.

Our systems – from our own bodies to the family and societal systems of which we are a part – are incredibly resourceful and complex. They carry templates and memories of past emboided and inter-generational experiences. And while our systems are adaptive and responsive, sometimes their best attempts at solving life’s challenges fall flat. In some cases, particularly where there has been acute or developmental trauma, old templates provoke pernicious repetitions – such as immobility in behaviors/relationships, or replacement of one unhelpful behavior/relationship for another equally unsatisfactory one.

The most important part of therapy is that you connect/feel safe with your therapist, and finding that therapist can be difficult, especially right now. Call or send me an email to arrange a free consultation and lets see if we think we're a good fit. Trust yourself, ask questions, you've come this far, you will find someone that seems right for you. Life is hard at the moment and you're probably ready for something to change, but what? I advocate for fierce joy, tolerating uncertainty and loss, digging deep, genuine relationships, holding ourselves accountable, playing to strengths, & being compassionate about our challenges.

We are all wired for relationships and we long to connect with the people we love. Our relationships with those around us affect the way we think and feel about ourselves and our world. Eventually, we develop habitual patterns of thinking that influence our emotions, behaviors, and even our physical experience. Sometimes, these patterns become problematic, cause us distress, and keep us from reaching our goals.

Greetings and welcome. It’s great you are taking the time to be here. Our journey through life can be filled with an amazing variety of experiences; some we cherish and appreciate, while others leave us feeling hurt, stuck, or struggling. When life sometimes throw us curve balls and challenges we were never expecting, it can be really helpful to have a caring, compassionate person along with us.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
