I believe that people are capable of making changes in their life and that is why I do what I do. I approach counseling from a cognitive behavioral perspective which means that I help clients examine their thought processes and how those processes drive their behavior. I also believe that we all have the resources in ourselves to find solutions to our problems. Mindfulness has become a well-known practice in helping to manage anxiety, depression, stress, and chronic pain. I have seen the benefits of this work in myself and with my clients and will incorporate this approach in my work with you.

I work collaboratively with my clients to support them in reaching their specific goals in life. Every person is unique and will experience an individualized approach that is best suited to their needs and preferences. By treating each person as a unique individual I respect the person's autonomy and am able to support the person's own capacities for change and healing. I am also pragmatic in my approach which means I use what works. I am flexible in how I approach treatment. This flexibility extends to how I provide counseling as well. I am available evenings, in person as well as by telehealth.

You are the only expert in *your* life. As Carl Rogers did, I believe that all people have the ability to bring about meaningful change in their lives, and a my role is to guide you to a greater understanding of that power, while gaining new, positive skills. Level UP! I continually strive to demonstrate empathy and unconditional positive regard. Life is hard enough as it is - getting help shouldn't be just another stressor on top of your never-ending To Do List. Stop listening to that voice in your head that tells you that you aren't good enough/strong enough/smart enough/busy enough/making enough. That voice is wrong.

I feel that everyone has a need for counseling at some point in life. Just as we have physical health, we have mental and emotional health. If we check in with mental and emotional health needs during difficulties, learning challenges or traumas, we can sustain our overall mental and physical health. Yes, they do go together! I enjoy working with clients who are open to new pathways and perspectives.

You're looking for tools and strategies to live your best life, whatever that may look like for you. It's easy to get overwhelmed by life, relationships and stress. Sometimes it's a day-by-day struggle, and you never know for sure when a smooth stretch will turn into a rough patch. For some of us, maintaining good mental health is chronically difficult.

I value centering treatment around each client’s unique needs, symptoms, and goals. I enjoy helping clients use their strengths to address their challenges, to empower them to be the best version of themselves. My goal is to create a space where clients feel safe to openly express themselves, so they can process their experiences that contribute to the pain and obstacles in their life. I believe it’s crucial to be compassionate and validate clients in their present stage of life, suffering, and healing. By honoring their experiences and adversity, while also gently challenging them, this can foster their personal growth and healing.

Are you seeking a space to be heard? To express without fear of judgment? A neutral party to listen and reflect? In my experience, listening is a skill that is not easily mastered. I offer the kind of listening your friends and your family cannot provide, as they may be too close to you and too close to the situation to be able to hear and see things clearly. Counseling provides a space for you to be seen, and to learn to embrace your unique perception. You need to be heard to understand how you think, and to be able to see how you are perceived by others. This will help you find harmony in your relationships.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
