Julie works with children, teenagers, adults, families and couples seeking counseling. Julie aligns with the theory of Emotionally Focused Therapy and believes that emotion is the body's expression of need. Exploration of triggers and behaviors related to emotion allow the client to begin to better understand themselves and how they relate to others. Connection and comfort are key to feeling safe and loved and in having a sense of belonging. Identifying emotions, learning to experience the emotion, and gaining awareness of what emotions arise are steps in accepting the given of life, being vulnerable, and sustaining connection.

My favorite part about being a counselor is watching people heal and grow into healthier versions of themselves. I provide support for those who have experienced Trauma, Anxiety, Depression, Low Self-Esteem, and Substance Abuse. I am trained in EMDR therapy, which is my favorite way to address Trauma and heal the nervous system. I believe that nearly everyone has been through some form of Trauma and it can be the root cause of many other mental health conditions.

I earned a BA in Women's Studies in 2006, Master's in Counseling Psychology in 2009, and Ph.
Growth and healing are best achieved within the context of a relationship. As a therapist with over 15 years of experience, I strive to connect with my clients on a deep level in order to facilitate meaningful and lasting change. I believe we our the expert of our own experience, and I seek to empower my client's in finding their own voice on the way to health and healing while providing guidance and support along the path. From a depth perspective, I take seriously the power of the unconscious, dreams, and synchronicities in a holistic, integrative approach which looks deeper than the surface level of the symptoms.

My treatment focus is to help individuals heal, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. This is achieved by providing a neutral, safe space, listening to their stories, and customizing a treatment plan. I promise my clients I will be there every step of their journey. The goal is to help them grow from their struggles, heal from their pain, and move forward in their lives after looking inward, unpacking emotions and experiences, and ultimately seeing and understanding this time of their lives through a clearer lens.

I'm particularly passionate about supporting men and women who have served our country.
Throughout life we are faced with obstacles that can leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed and defeated. At times we may even feel so alone, depressed or hopeless that we begin to think that suicide may be our only option. If this sounds like you--you are not alone! I have helped many clients to manage and overcome these issues, while feeling more empowered and in control of their lives. I understand how hard it is to seek out help. I am here to support you in your journey to change, healing and living a more fulfilling life.

In life we encounter experiences that conceal our potential to flourish or succeed and this can make us feel stuck or helpless in a sense of suffering, struggling to get by. These blocks can come in many forms: traumatic experiences, negative messages we receive, illness, relationship patterns, grief, depression, anxiety, among others. Together we can work to find the root of the issue and find healing. I work to serve as a mirror to my clients, reflecting insights about patterns, internal dialog, and behaviors that are hard to "see".

In life, change is inevitable. Sometimes we want it, and sometimes we don't. Sometimes it comes easy, and sometimes it's among the hardest thing we'll ever try to do. Themes central to experiencing change include tolerating uncertainties, having safe supportive others who can witness and support change, and having choice on the kinds of support needed to make sustainable change. I'm pleased to offer Psychotherapy to residents in the State of Montana, as well as Programs and Collective Healing Communities.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
