What are you noticing about your life? How you answer that question will determine where you're headed and whether or not it's where you want to be. It's not for me to say what that is, or even if it's right or wrong. That's up to you. Equine assisted psychotherapy is one of the most unique and effective ways to experience yourself and how you impact the world around you. It's life changing and a powerful way to gain new insight into yourself. What you do with that can be a challenge so there's more to the story.

I have worked with many men and teens struggling with pornography, sexual addiction, and the shame and confusion that can accompany working through one's sexual identity.
In my ten years as a counselor, it's been my privilege to care for men, teens, and couples wrestling with depression, stress, and anxiety; addiction (drugs and alcohol; gambling; sexual...); the grief involved with divorce; the struggles associated with life's transitions; difficulties in school and relationships; and family conflict. My hope is that the men and wo men I talk to would be able to experience intimacy in their relationships, fullness of life, and find success in their daily lives.

I've had GREAT success employing the Gott man Marital Therapy framework and the Gott man Relationship Checkup survey.
After retiring as Director of Counseling at Lindenwood University, I moved to Warren County; I live in Troy and now practice videotherapy from my home office. I have been an LPC in Missouri since 1987, and the author of two books. I very much enjoy working with clients; I have a professional, energetic, friendly style. As a systems therapist, I approach clients in an interdependent manner... never in isolation. Even when working with individual clients, I am mindful of how their myriad relationships affect them...and how they affect others. I think of all clients psycho-biologically. IFS and ketamine are new interests.

My specialty is Grief, Depression, Anxiety, Trauma, First Responders and Sports/School/Job Perfor mance.
I have a passion to assist you in overcoming adversity and facing your mental health concerns. Empathy, open-mindedness, and communication are my core values. My path to counseling began very young through my own personal experience with loss of life, which lead me to the path to helping others. I understand that missing our loved ones and being depressed is normal, and the key to grieving is to find a way to form a new relationship with the one we lost. In addition, through my collegiate student-athlete experience I understand the delicate balance of being a student-athlete, including the pressures that come along with it.

I can best help adult clients seeking support for anxiety, depression, stress & anger management, academic & career challenges, life transitions, and interpersonal relationships (including couples).
Our world often stigmatizes needing support, but let's face it: no one gets anywhere without help! Change and growth come with challenges, and having the support of a genuine and compassionate therapist can make a positive difference. Whether you are experiencing a significant personal development, struggling to relate to others, or feeling stuck and looking for a change for the better, reaching out to someone trained to help is a critical step towards finding a way to live more authentically. As a therapist, I work with individuals & couples to create a space to process experiences and find a path forward to greater well-being.

I have a passion for working with people seeking to find peace, healing, and growth in their lives. I facilitate a calm and supportive space for people so they can find healing for wounds both past and present. I have found that most problems people are dealing with results from unhealed trauma and grievances. I work with people to help them understand themselves, their hurts, their strengths, and their resources so they can heal and grow. Therapy is something I am passionate about because I've seen it work for people time and time again.

My ideal client would be parents or caregivers seeking treatment for their children with behavioral, emotional, and social problems, such as ODD, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and other typical childhood issues. These clients would be interested in a parent training format for the treatments, indicating a willingness to actively participate in the therapy process and work collaboratively with the therapist. Additionally, the ideal client would be open to utilizing technology for teletherapy sessions, as my services are presented in an online therapy platform.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
