Life brings challenges that are often unexpected, uncertain, and, at times, feel profoundly unfair. Many of us struggle with forces that disrupt our peace: grief and loss that leave an aching emptiness, addiction that binds us, mental illness that cripples our minds, relationship difficulties that create rifts, severe trauma that tears at our spirits, and life changes that leave us feeling adrift. Reaching out for help is a brave first step toward healing and finding light amidst the darkness. No matter the challenge, there is hope and healing amidst the darkness. The monsters of our lives are real, but we can defeat them, together!

Life's challenges have intensified over the last year for many of us. Our mental health has also been challenged. Feeling safe and connected are universal needs. When things become unbalanced, it is easy for symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD to increase.

Many of my clients enter therapy to address the feeling of groundlessness that can occur when things fall apart. It may be an episode of significant depression or anxiety, unresolved trauma, a life changing loss such as divorce or death, or a crisis of awakening and challenging previously held understandings of the self in the world. There are many paths that take us into therapy, and I walk that path with my clients to develop a better understanding and integration to adapt to life when we find ourselves at these challenging points.

I changed my career late in life because I wanted to walk with people through life's challenges. I enjoy helping people navigate a broken relationship, addiction, trauma, depression and anxiety. Married 45 years, I enjoy seeing a couple build something new and wonderful in their relationship. I know it can happen, it happened to me.

After retiring as Director of Counseling at Lindenwood University, I moved to Warren County; I live in Troy and now practice videotherapy from my home office. I have been an LPC in Missouri since 1987, and the author of two books. I very much enjoy working with clients; I have a professional, energetic, friendly style. As a systems therapist, I approach clients in an interdependent manner... never in isolation. Even when working with individual clients, I am mindful of how their myriad relationships affect them...and how they affect others. I think of all clients psycho-biologically. IFS and ketamine are new interests.

Hi, I’m Angela. My specialty is guiding adults through difficult life transitions. I can help you through the stress and anxiety of a career change, divorce, a move, a new role or identity, or the ending of an era. I’m especially experienced and passionate about helping women through the menopausal transition. These transitions are often met with loss of identity, anxiety, loneliness, stigma or dismissal, where women feel lost, overwhelmed and misunderstood. I’m deeply committed to empowering others, helping them rediscover their identities and values in the midst of a significant life change, as well as developing coping skills.

I look forward to working with clients whose life path may have created difficulties for them that has led them not be the best of who they can be. Each individual's path may have been sprinkled with physical or emotional abuse, neglect, assault, grief and loss, domestic violence, marital or parental discord or a myriad of other situations. Sometimes these life paths create in my clients a feeling of hopeless and loss of self-worth, sometimes these path end with someone needing to determine a plan to leave an unsafe living situation. Sometimes these paths lead to turning to substances and illegal drugs to cope with the internal turmoil and pain. It is my privlege to work with clients to help them identify and bring forth the best of who they are and what they want for their life, their family and their future through their own individual strengths.

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
