Hi. My name is Lisa Walton, LCSW. I am licensed in the states of Missouri, Florida and Tennessee to provide clinical therapy & counseling services. I have over 15 years of clinical counseling experience and 22 years of working with mostly at-risk clients in the social services setting. I have worked with a diverse population of adults, adolescents, and children in various settings including psychiatric facility, group home, state penitentiary school, in home, and on military installations. I have provided therapy in the form of individual, family, couples.

Most distressed couples that come to see me usually present difficulty being responsive to their partners. My focus in a session is to structure a safe environment for individuals to take a step back, identify their interaction cycle, and feel comfortable expressing their most vulnerable feelings to their loved-ones, leading to new and positive interactions. By increasing the emotional responsiveness within the system, members won't unwillingly push others away in their attempts to be closer.

Reaching out for support takes strength and courage. I respect this, and my aim is to create a calm, inviting atmosphere where a deep sense of trust can grow between client and therapist. I believe that pain shared is pain lessened and that people can and do recover from issues that have been troubling them for years. I have found that many people enter therapy not because of a complex mental health issue but because of a general feeling of life not being what they would like it to be. I believe people are unique and therefore there is no cookie cutter approach to working with clients. My experience is that everyone has the capacity to find their way to solutions and hold the answers to the questions they seek but may need guidance in the process. I believe in the "stool" approach to life. We all have our stool and it has three legs: Physical, Emotional and Spiritual. If any of these legs is shorter or longer than the others we are off balance. The more off balance the stool is, the more uncomfortable we are in life.

Utilizing a Cognitive Behavioral approach I address a wide variety of issues, including low self-esteem, anxiety and depression. The way we think affects the way we feel which affects our responses to those around us. In Couples' counseling I emphasize the importance of being mindful of the negative scripts triggered by your partner and identifying ways to become the partner you want to be.

Our clients often identify as LGBTQIAs2+ / Queer, Non-monogamous, sex positive or sex neutral, neurodivergence, and or disabled and living within Missouri or Kansas. However, identifying in these communities is not a requirement for services through AAC. Clients often start therapy to work on goals to learn more about identities, setting boundaries with others in their lives, opening up their relationship, learning more about themselves or others gender or sexual expression. Through individual, relationship, or family counseling we work to increase healthy communication based on our values, instead of assumed social norms.
