For over 21-years I worked as a certified dental assistant caring for patients who suffered with physical pain and low self-esteem as a result of dental problems. In 2005, I felt an overwhelming desire to serve individuals suffering with deeper, more enduring emotional pain. Prior to returning to college in 2007, I worked for two years with individuals who were facing unplanned pregnancies. Devoting my time to community outreach and crisis intervention resulted in the development of a successful community crisis center that served five counties, still in operation today. In 2011, I earned my bachelor’s degree in social work.

Reaching out for support takes strength and courage. I respect this, and my aim is to create a calm, inviting atmosphere where a deep sense of trust can grow between client and therapist. I believe that pain shared is pain lessened and that people can and do recover from issues that have been troubling them for years. I have found that many people enter therapy not because of a complex mental health issue but because of a general feeling of life not being what they would like it to be. I've been there. Many years ago I embarked on my own personal growth journey and I believe that has made me a more compassionate, empathic therapist.

Meet Jocelyn Throughout my life, I have experienced and witnessed the healing power of therapy in several different ways. It was through these personal experiences that I learned first hand how instrumental the relationship between a client and a therapist can be in facilitating healing and lasting change. These experiences solidified my desire to help others have similar positive experiences. I believe relationships we have with the people we love most, have a profound impact on our happiness, health and ability to thrive. Life can make it hard to take care of those relationships.

Life gets tough sometimes and everyone needs a little help. Sometimes that help comes from friends or family, but other times that help can come from a professional. Reaching out to a counselor is tough but frequently can be the first step towards improvement in life. It is important to find a counselor with whom you feel comfortable enough to do the tough work and talk about the hard issues. I enjoy learning whether that is from formal training and classwork or from the people I work with. I consider therapy a collaborative experience where we learn from each other.

My passion is helping people achieve healthy relationships that honor, strengthen, and validate the people in them. I enjoy helping young men and women to build significant and open relationships on their way through dating and engagement as well as working with them on tools to address the conflict in their marriage. Often times unchecked anxiety leads to depression and I have many effective tools for people who struggle in attending to their anxiety in an effective way. I work with addictions of all kinds in a non shaming, caring, effective, and healing way.

Anger Management Therapists

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
