I believe in providing a safe space for my clients to work towards their goals. By providing a safe space to open up about vulnerable topics my goal is to assist you in learning how to challenge maladaptive coping strategies and replace them with adaptive ones. In counseling the process to work towards change can be scary and difficult and that is why my number one goal as a therapist is providing a safe and inviting space to open up.I believe in using a person-centered approach, which means allowing you to guide the sessions. I have found that allowing you to build rapport and work towards your goals it fosters the most change.

The truth is life can be hard and things can be tough. We may feel down on our luck or even feel hopeless that things will never change. Depression, anxiety, sleepless nights, confusion and stress happen to the best of us and it is ok to reach out to a professional. It is normal to feel lost and uncertain sometimes on how to take a step forward towards living a more enjoyable life defined by your own terms. I believe reaching goals and true change can happen with the right mindset and tools, which I strive to help my clients develop in the most effective way!

Psychotherapy can offer more than the reduction of symptoms, also altering the trajectory of your life and development. Benefits often continue to accrue even after its completion. People who seek me out tend to need help to face irrational fears, tolerate anxiety, abandon rumination/worry, relinquish unhealthy coping, overcome the avoidance of painful feelings, deal with the demands/expectations of others, resolve grief, enhance an underdeveloped sense of self, navigate life transitions, and make sense of experiences of social alienation and exclusion. Some are therapists seeking their own, deeper therapy.

I have been a therapist for the past decade, and work from a psychodynamic and trauma-informed perspective. I strive to provide a safe, respectful space in which to explore thoughts, feelings, dreams, and desires. I work with a range of issues, and have particular experience with anxiety, trauma, and depression; life transitions; and concerns related to identity. I have been fortunate to work with a diverse group of people, and have found a particular affinity for creative people, academics, and those passionate about their work; those who feel particularly sensitive; and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

My ideal clients are ages 13 and up. I thoroughly enjoy working with pre-teens and teenagers, as well as members of the LGBTQIA+ community. The life-changing events associated with growing up in today's world are often stressful, and my purpose is to bring peace and clarity to those otherwise troubling moments.

Growing up is HARD. You get home after a tiring day at school where you felt invisible. You sat with friends at lunch, but left feeling like they don’t really get you. You open your backpack to loads of homework, when your mom reminds you to work on your college applications. The overwhelm takes over. You grab your phone and start to scroll, which leaves you feeling numb, empty and alone. After a tense family dinner, you go back to your room, feeling unheard and misunderstood. Figuring out who you are and what you want is hard while navigating school, work, friends, family, and relationships. You just wish things were easier.

Change can happen at any age. All it takes is the commitment and willingness to look at oneself and gain insight, and put steps into action toward change. I provide the support, validation, and openness to help individuals and families explore both their strengths, and address and improve the cycles that make them unhappy. I am action oriented and direct, while leaving space for self-exploration and growth in a warm and nurturing environment.

The goal of my approach to therapy is to get your defense system out of the way so that you can operate out of your true sense of self, begin to create boundaries, and make choices truly reflective of your own wants and needs. When you achieve this, you no longer need to rely upon the destructive coping techniques previously used to prevent your full evolution and integration of body, mind, and spirit.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
