Trauma is identified as an event that a individual has processed as deeply painful and disturbing, causing lingering symptoms including but not limited to: depression, anxiety, self-harm, PTSD, dissociation, and somatic symptoms (such as body pain or illness).
Safety, trust, and empathy are foundational to any counseling relationship. As a professional who has also experienced trauma in her own life, I understand not only that foundation, but also the deep pain that comes with indescribable hurt. Many times, those who have experienced painful events, are unable to find the words to describe it. This is where I am able to help. I can bring peace, when the pain is too much for words. Your story is beautiful, and there is hope.

I utilize EMDR & Somatic EMDR as tools in the healing process.
Are you troubled by negative or distressing thoughts & memories from the past or present? Have you experienced a trauma? Perhaps you find yourself "overreacting" to minor or non-incidents. Do others say you're "too sensitive"? Maybe you have lost someone or something and you're finding it difficult to move forward. You are in a battle to reclaim you're stability, freedom, joy, self-confidence, self-worth, self-control, or even a part of yourself. Somehow you have lost your way & you would give just about anything to get back to how life used to be. Or maybe you desire something even better than before. . . .

Hello! My name is Melanie, but everyone calls me Mia. I know how disorienting and frustrating life can feel sometimes- like you're stuck going around in circles, unsure of how to break the cycle. Whether you want to explore how an old wound is showing up in the present day, or learn to develop new ways of relating to people, therapy is a powerful tool to help you move ahead with clarity and confidence. I especially enjoy working with young women as they develop a strong sense of identity, as well as couples who have hit a snag. You can expect me to show up as a sensitive, challenging and collaborative partner on your journey.

My methods include Somatic Experiencing – a body-centered approach that addresses physiological dysregulation resulting from trauma, EMDR – which works with the brain’s natural healing mechanisms to reprocess traumatic experiences.
Heather (she/her) practices a holistic approach when working with clients. She desires for every client to know they have a voice, and their story is important. Heather offers a safe place where clients can find authentic healing by engaging with their story and helping their mind and body to recognize that the old threat has passed. It is safe to live in the present reality. Heather walks with clients to help them understand, experience, and accept the reality of life – with all of its desires and sorrows – and leads them to a life of healing and flourishing.

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
