You may be struggling to set boundaries, feeling burned out or like your trauma and past are defining you. As a parent, you may be in a season of overwhelm while raising your own children. I specialize in women's issues including self-image and growth, trauma recovery, miscarriage and perinatal loss, postpartum depression and adjustment, intimate relationship (pre/post and during), parenting, friendship, and family of origin relationships, grief and all of life's stressors.
Sometimes life gets hard, and we get lost; it is my desire that no one is alone during those times. Therapy is not a magical healing but rather as Mary Pipher wrote, "Therapy gives clients a safe relationship in which to explore their inner world and to consider taking risks in their external one." I work with couples to enhance their marriages, parents as they raise their children, and individuals to process grief, establish healthy relationships, thinking patterns, and boundaries to overcome anger, anxiety, or depression.

You have your life together, but inside, you feel you are crumbling. On the outside, no one notices. All they see is someone who is responsible and is able to do the things that need to be done. You make it through the day, only to get home and have a wave of emotions drown you. It has not always been like this, the person that was on the outside was the way you felt on the inside. But things seemed to shift. You try to think, when did this happen? And then you realize, you know the answer. It was that one situation. The situation you have tried to bury because even just thinking about it brings you back into the moment.

I know going to see a counselor for help can be an intimidating experience. I also know life is full of transitions, some of them are by our choice, others are imposed on us. Once we are able to get everything out on the table so that I understand your situation, we will work together to target goals and begin the process of reaching those goals. With over 20 years of mental health experience, I have worked closely with individuals, couples, families and teens on a variety of issue. I have had the privilege of hearing peoples stories and helping them gain insight and tools along their journey.

Amber is trained in EMDR, certified in Trauma Focused-CBT, Rostered in Child Parent Psychotherapy.
When meeting clients I begin with the question of "What happened to you" rather than "What is wrong with you." When I get to watch and bear witness as an individual or family grows and is able to heal it humbles me! I like to walk along side those I work with in helping them develop/discover the life and relationships they desire. I also enjoy working with couples in achieving satisfying marriages or relationships. When not at work I enjoy reading, being in nature, spending time with my family, walking my dog and gardening. I also believe in bringing humor into my work as it helps us all remember what in life is good!

Being a woman today can mean living with a lot of insecurity and anxiety. You want to appear successful and put together, but deep down you are struggling to figure out who you are, cope with the chaos in your life, and work through a difficult past. The pressures of everyday life fill you with constant overwhelm, relationships feel distant and stressful, and your energy reserves have been depleted. You can hold it together and make it through the day, but by the time you get home you are exhausted. Cooking, dinner, socialization, and parenting seem like impossible tasks.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
